4 WWE superstars who surprisingly haven't won any singles titles on main roster

While winning titles is usually one of every wrestler's goals, a lot of prominent superstars haven't captured singles titles in WWE.

With four primary singles titles for the men to chase, you'd figure that those superstars not deemed 'main-event' worthy would at least have a run with a mid-card title like the US Title or the Intercontinental Championship.

A lot of times, who does or doesn't win a title simply comes down to who creative is or isn't behind at the moment.

Wrestlers like Braun Strowman and Finn Balor have always been pegged as future champions and Balor was even one of the biggest stars ever produced by NXT.

But how many title reigns does he have under his 'belt' on the main roster? Only a one-day reign as Universal Champion.

A sad fact about wrestling and WWE, in particular, is that although some superstars are treated like threats or big deals, they often don't see their success met with titles.

While it isn't surprising that someone like Mojo Rawley or Tyler Breeze hasn't captured a tile on the main roster, there are some superstars who have had shots in the main event.

Who else surprisingly hasn't captured a singles' title on the main roster of WWE? Here are four surprising names who have yet to taste singles' gold in WWE.

#4 Braun Strowman

How many start-stop pushes has Strowman experienced?

While he has the infamous one-day tag title reign with Nicholas under his belt, it was more of a joke than a true championship reign.

So since Strowman has often been treated as a literal big deal on the main roster, he should have held some sort of championship on Raw, right?

Well, as most of all know, Strowman has received more than his fair share of shots at the Universal Championship.

He's lost to Brock Lesnar in a triple threat match with Kane at the 2018 Royal Rumble as well as two singles matches with the Beast for the Universal Title.

Strowman also 'cashed in' his Money in the Bank briefcase in a steel cage against Roman Reigns before Reigns had to relinquish the Universal Title. Lesnar ruined that once again when he interfered.

That's four matches for the Universal Championship in which he's failed to capture the title. But since he wasn't given a main title run, then conventional thinking would figure he'd more than be trusted with a mid-card title run.

But alas, he has not won either the IC Title or the US Title. He's been on the main roster since August of 2015, so is time running out on his credibility?

#3 Elias

You can walk with Elias but he won't be carrying gold if you do.

Elias debuted on the Raw after WrestleMania in 2017. While his act didn't catch on in NXT, it really caught steam once he started performing in the ring on episodes of Raw.

The simple gimmick of insulting the city WWE was in is a time-tested heat magnet, and singing about his disdain for that town only turned up the heat from the fans.

Since he was given some freedom with his songs/promos, he was able to connect with the fans so much to the point where he often received one of the loudest reactions from the crowd on a nightly basis.

WWE might have experimented with Elias as a face when Roman reigns' departure forced WWE to switch up the alignments of some stars.

One star was Elias, as he was turned to a face who started to rag on Baron Corbin. The crowd still cheered loudly for him, only this time in agreement with the Drifter.

But WWE decided not to capitalize on his popularity either time as he failed to capture the Intercontinental Championship while Seth Rollins, Dolph Ziggler, and Bobby Lashley have held the title.

He's only been on WWE proper for a little under two years, so he still has a chance to be a singles' champion. He's already a singles' star but perhaps creative feels he's over enough without a title.

#2 Samoa Joe

Samoa Joe gets another crack at a potential WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber.
Samoa Joe gets another crack at a potential WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber.

Samoa Joe has constantly been a threat to every superstar on both Raw and SmackDown. While he did hold the NXT Title on two occasions, he hasn't been lucky enough to capture a singles' title on Raw or SmackDown.

He debuted on January 30, 2017, when he attacked Seth Rollins in Triple H's name. It took some time, but he eventually challenged Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam in 2017 along with Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman.

Lesnar retained, marking number one on Joe's list of failed title attempts. Number two would come when he failed in a singles' match for the title against Lesnar.

Joe was shifted to SmackDown Live in the Superstar Shake Up last year and eventually battled AJ Styles three separate times for the WWE Championship. He lost each time.

Since he has been persistently chasing one of the main titles in WWE, it means he's seen as a main-event guy, but since he hasn't captured any singles' titles and doesn't even have a mid-card title run on his resume is a little disconcerting for someone of his talent.

1 Sami Zayn

Once one of the hardest workers in NXT, the work remains but his efforts haven't been met with gold.
Once one of the hardest workers in NXT, the work remains but his efforts haven't been met with gold.

Zayn, another former NXT Champion, competed in the 2016 Royal Rumble and has been a main-roster fixture following his March 7 debut of the same year.

Ad

He originally debuted as an underdog babyface with a ton of heart who always came up short. Since that was basically his gimmick for his first run as a face, it's not really a surprise that he hasn't captured the main roster title yet.

Along with his friend Kevin Owens, Zayn is one of the most talented superstars in WWE. Whereas Owens was the most stable Universal Champion, Zayn has consistently fallen short in any bid to capture a singles title.

Ad

He was in a multi-man match for the IC Title at WrestleMania 32 but lost. He also was unable to capture the IC Title against the Miz and the US Title against Chris Jericho.

When he and Kevin Owens were members of SmackDown, both Zayn and Owens challenged AJ Styles for the WWE Championship but to no avail.

Zayn might just be one of the superstars that creative feels doesn't need or deserve a title, but his work in the ring and during promos, especially as a smug heel, will hopefully translate to some sort of title run once he returns from injury.
