Widely regarded to be one of the best factions in WWE history, the trio of Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose dominated WWE during their time together as a unit. Debuting at Survivor Series 2012, The Shield remained undefeated for a long time.

At Extreme Rules 2013, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins defeated Team Hell No to win the WWE World Tag Team Championship. Later in the night, Dean Ambrose defeated Kofi Kingston to capture the United States Championship. Ambrose's win led to all the members of The Shield holding Championships at the same time.

The start of 2014 saw The Shield turning babyface and rebelling against The Authority. After defeating Kane and The New Age Outlaws at WrestleMania, The Shield feuded with the newly-reformed Evolution. The Shield defeated Evolution at Extreme Rules and later at Payback in a No Holds Barred Elimination Match.

The main event of the June 2, 2014 episode of RAW saw Seth Rollins turning on his Shield cohorts, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose, and join forces with Triple H and The Authority.

A wave of shock ran through the crowd as Rollins took a steel chair and stabbed it through the back of the two men who he once referred to as his brothers. What made Rollins' turn so impactful was the fact that it came out of nowhere.

Rollins' association with The Authority would pay dividends for The Architect as he would win the Money in the Bank Ladder Match a month later. And the rest, as they as, is history.
