Andrade 'Cien' Almas had achieved success in CMLL and New Japan at a young age even before signing with WWE. Almas debuted in NXT in 2016 but was a hidden gem until the second half of 2017. He had various storylines with No Way Jose and Cedric Alexander, but none of them put Almas in the spotlight.

Almas rose to popularity when he defeated Drew McIntyre and won the NXT Champion. He retained the title twice against Johnny Gargano, with their match at TakeOver: Philadelphia being the best in NXT history, and earning five stars from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
