The feud between Triple H and Randy Orton in early 2009 is regarded by many as one of the most intense and well-built rivalries of all time. Orton was as ruthless and dastardly as he had ever been. The buildup to the WrestleMania match saw him attacking Triple H's wife Stephanie McMahon, as well as Shane McMahon.
At WrestleMania, The Game exacted revenge on Orton and ended The Viper with a sledgehammer and a Pedigree in the main event of the night. Triple H had finally put Orton down after months of mental and physical suffering. This match didn't mark the end of the feud though.
At Backlash 2009, a Six-Man Tag Team match was contested between Legacy and Triple H, Batista & Shane McMahon. The stipulation stated that Orton would win the title if any member of Triple H's team got disqualified, counted out, or pinned. A Punt kick to the head did the job and Orton won the WWE title.
