The former WWE Champion had won the Intercontinental title by defeating CM Punk on an episode of RAW. JBL was later challenged to a match by Rey Mysterio for the Intercontinental title. Merely days before WrestleMania 25, Mysterio gained some momentum by defeating JBL in a non-title match.
Heading into WrestleMania, JBL had promised an unforgettable moment. Before the match even started, JBL began a ruthless assault on Mysterio, who asked the referee to start the match even though he seemed to be in a semi-conscious state. As soon as the match kicked off, Mysterio turned the tables around by hitting a 619 on JBL and pinning him to become the new Intercontinental Champion.
JBL was left dumbstruck in the ring, as Rey left the spot to celebrate his quick victory. Soon after, the self-proclaimed Wrestling God took a mic and announced that he is quitting. This was JBL's final singles match, and he went back behind the announce table soon after.

Given the opportunity to script WWE’s next big storyline, Abhilash would treat fans to the second installment of The Bloodline Civil War. He would book Roman Reigns to re-form The Bloodline with The Usos and Sami Zayn upon his comeback. The angle would see The Tribal Chief-led group go head-to-head with The Rock, Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, and Jacob Fatu in a blockbuster family feud.
