WWE has a lot of work to do with the Universal title picture heading into WrestleMania 35, especially with Seth Rollins taking time off to deal with an injury, and putting Dean Ambrose into the mix could be the solution the company needs in the meantime. In fact, it could be a great send off for The Lunatic Fringe if he really is set to leave the company.
With that being said, it is believed that this was the original plan for WWE until Ambrose made it clear that he wasn't renewing his contract, which means the company was at least open to the idea. Beyond that, Ambrose is healthy right now and thus able to do physical segments with Brock Lesnar while Rollins is out.
In the end, it's the perfect way to bring Ambrose's real-life contract negotiations to the forefront and also stall time until Rollins is ready to go for WrestleMania 35. Maybe WWE could even do a CM Punk style storyline, where Ambrose threatens to walk out of the company with the title, which would be really cool to see and add an extra layer to the match.
