To some, The Undertaker may seem like an intimidating monster whose day you simply do not want to disturb. To others, he’s a friendly guy whose years of hard work in the business can be passed down in the form of sound advice.
How often in ‘shoot’ interviews have we heard former wrestlers criticise someone they worked with or shared a locker room with? Lots. How many times has anything derogatory been said about “The Deadman”? Well, it just never happens.
In every era of WWE that ‘Taker performed in, he had the utmost respect of his fellow Superstars. In this article, we look at five current wrestlers who have received advice from the man himself.
#1 Big Show
Two stalwarts of the WWE locker room with over four decades of wrestling know-how between them, it’s no surprise the more experienced Undertaker took Big Show under his wing during the early stages of his career.
“The World’s Largest Athlete” told TheSPORTbible in September 2016 that, at a time when other Superstars only cared about TV ratings and their own performances, ‘Taker was willing to share a few wise words.
“Undertaker is one of the greatest and smartest guys in the history of the business. He understands his character so well and he’s an expert in psychology. I was lucky enough to come in at a time and have him as my mentor when there wasn’t a lot of mentors around.”
#2 Finn Balor
While we never got to see “The Demon” vs. “The Demon of Death Valley”, the two did have opportunities to chat backstage. As Finn explained to the Channel Guide Magazine in August 2015, ‘Taker may have had a helping hand in the making of his entrance.
“I've been very fortunate to talk to Undertaker when I first came in here. We talked about entrances. He gave me a lot of advice that helps me to this day. So I'm very grateful for that.”
#3 Bray Wyatt
A regular criticism of Bray Wyatt has been his lack of character development as a singles star. To begin with, his promos were edgy and presented in a manner fans hadn’t seen in years. Over time, however, there’s an argument to be had that he has become stale and needs a fresh approach.
Fear not, Bray fans, as “The Eater of Worlds” revealed to the Miami Herald in September 2017 that, as advised by his WrestleMania 31 opponent, he will continue to evolve as a character as his career progresses.
"I think the thing about keeping your character fresh is when you change as an individual you have to flow with it… You can't stay the same. As you mature as an adult, you find out you have to keep changing in this business. It's something The Undertaker laid on me."
#4 Big Cass
You’d go a long way to find a better wrestling big man for Big Cass to try to emulate than the legendary Undertaker. The 7ft tall Raw superstar says he often studies old matches that "The Phenom" had earlier in his career.
Speaking on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast in August 2017, Cass also described ‘Taker as “The Godfather” of the WWE locker room and said that, unlike some of his fellow superstars, he is not too intimidated by the 52-year-old to ask for his opinion.
“I feel like I have a good rapport with him and I try to talk to him as much as possible. When he's around, I try to pick his brain and just try to listen to what he thinks about what I'm doing and what other people are doing because he's The Undertaker."
#5 Baron Corbin
Not only has Baron Corbin sought advice from Big Show, whose former house he now lives in, but he’s also had words of wisdom from The Undertaker, who owned the very same house before Big Show!
The “Lone Wolf” revealed on Talk Is Jericho in June 2017 that the WWE legend offered him some advice while training at the Performance Centre in the build-up to WrestleMania.
“‘Taker was giving me input on entrances and the way I move. He's even yelled at me a few times, like 'why would you do that? Don't ever do that again!' … He would come in around ‘Mania and watch us at the PC [Performance Centre] and he’d kind of grab onto me a little bit, which was cool.”
