The term ‘dream match’ is thrown around a lot in professional wrestling. It refers to a bout never seen before and a bout that fans would absolutely love to witness.
Over the years, many of wrestling’s dream encounters have taken place. Such as Hogan’s battles with Andre The Giant, The Rock and The Ultimate Warrior. Shawn Michaels’ matches with the likes of Chris Jericho, Steve Austin and The Undertaker.
In this article, I will attempt to outline the 5 major dream matches that I think the WWE fans may never get to witness.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#5: Hulk Hogan vs John Cena
Completely contrasting from the matches in the list, this bout completely encompasses each man’s legacy. Hulk Hogan is an icon in wrestling and always will be, but unlike Cena, Hogan had stars equally matched surrounding him who helped elevate his career and mold him into the household name that he became. John Cena, on the other hand, has had to endure intense pressure from many corners of the WWE Universe based on his wrestling style, win/loss ratio and his stale, un-changing gimmick.
The probability of this match happening is very slim, but if it ever happens, it will most likely be Hogan’s last match.
#4: The Rock vs Shawn Michaels
The Rock and Shawn Michaels are two of the best ever to lace up a pair of boots and their paths not crossing in WWE is almost criminal. In the early 2000s or late 90s, which wrestling fan wouldn’t have wanted to see these two go at it at some point?
The matches would’ve been incredible, as would the promos, and many fans certainly feel aggrieved at not ever having seen this one. Both men are known for their strong connections with the audience, and both men were absolute geniuses when it came to selling a match, feud or opponent.
Either way, had this match happened years ago, it would almost certainly have been a match of the year candidate or better, and one to live on throughout the ages.
#3: The Big Show vs Andre The Giant
For obvious reasons, this match, unfortunately, cannot ever happen. While some may look at this on paper and not like it, others will appreciate it's meaning and why it would take place. Throughout his career, Big Show has constantly been compared to Andre in terms of his size and look. Both men were part of some very high-profile events and feuds in their respective careers, and deserve to be honored for their efforts.
Andre’s death in 1993 sparked the launch of the WWE Hall of Fame, but fans will never forget the attraction that he was and the special appeal he had to those who saw him live. Regardless of the technical quality that this match could’ve showcased, it is important to remember that wrestling is, above all else, entertainment and storytelling, and these two will go down in history as the greatest giants of all time.
#2: Stone Cold vs CM Punk
Had CM Punk not left the company in the manner that he did all the way back in 2014, this match would probably be far more likely than it is now. Austin and Punk have always been connected by an intriguing plethora of parallels, from their days as anti-heroes and crowd favourites, to their ties to alcohol. Austin being the beer-drinker and Punk being the straight-edge superstar has always made for a fascinating foundation between the two megastars, and to this day fans still eagerly await the day that Austin and Punk collide. This match has been played up so much in the past that fans almost became expectant of seeing it on a big stage.
Still, let us not forget that Punk may return to wrestling in the future and when he does, expect the Austin rumours to circulate around him once again. Off all the dream matches on the list, this is what I want to see the most, and I expect many other WWE fans to be in the same boat.
#1: The Undertaker vs Sting
I'm often listening to people talk about why Undertaker versus Sting should or shouldn’t happen. It is always an interesting debate amongst wrestling fans, as Sting is the only big star to never face the Undertaker at the grandest stage of them all.
The choice of his next opponent, if he ever wrestles, must be an intelligent one and The Undertaker seems the most logical choice as he is firmly cemented as an icon in the WWE, regardless of his broken-streak, and a match between the two at WrestleMania 35 will be a treat for both casual and hardcore fans.
Both men though, are in the twilight of their careers, and both men are in and around their fifties, meaning that the quality of the match that we may get could be negatively affected.
