Io Shirai took a lengthy break from WWE NXT in 2021 after losing the NXT Women's Championship. However, she has returned just in time to pick up another couple of wins to add to her tally.
She started 2021 as the NXT Women's Champion, defending it in a Triple Threat match against Toni Storm and Mercedes Martinez. After beating Zoey Stark, Shirai would then successfully defend the title against Toni Storm in singles action.
Shortly afterwards, Shirai and Stark lost a tag-team match to Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzales, before Gonzales would beat Shirai in singles action to end her title reign.
However, after that, Shirai and Stark would team together twice, winning both times, including the most recent NXT Women's Tag Team #1 contender Triple Threat match. This leaves Shirai with a record of five wins out of seven matches.
