Billy Kidman was a popular Cruiserweight star in WCW during the Monday Night Wars. He made his way to WWE following WCW's purchase and was one of the first wrestlers to secure a contract with Vince McMahon's company. He defeated Gregory Helms in his first match in WWE, winning the Cruiserweight title in the process. He won the Cruiserweight title on four occasions during his WWE stint and also had a short-lived Tag Team title run with Paul London.

By October 2002, John Cena had become a pretty recognizable face on the Blue brand but he was yet to don the "Dr. of Thuganomics" gimmick.
Around the same time, he got into a feud with Kidman and both engaged in a series of matches that included a Mixed Tag Team match which saw Kidman and Torrie Wilson defeat Dawn Marie and John Cena. On the October 22 edition of SmackDown, Kidman managed to score a pin over Cena in a singles match.
The Mixed Tag team match followed next week, thus putting an end to the feud.

He would book Roman Reigns to re-form The Bloodline with The Usos and Sami Zayn upon his comeback.
