Bret Hart won a match between himself, The Undertaker, Psycho Sid, Vader, and Stone Cold Steve Austin to determine the new WWE Champion after Shawn Michaels vacated it in 1997. Hart won the match and captured the belt only to lose it the next night on RAW to Psycho Sid.

While Stone Cold Steve Austin and Bret Hart continued with their feud, it threw doors open for The Undertaker to challenge Psycho Sid for a title match at WrestleMania. This was the only storyline where Stone Cold Steve Austin could potentially have a match with The Undertaker at The Grandest Stage Of Them All.
