2017 was a strange year for the WWE. While RAW churned out one stupendous PPV after another, SmackDown struggled to produce decent events throughout the year. Barring the Hell in a Cell PPV, all the other SmackDown PPV's fell way short of expectations and left a lot to be desired. But the WWE still has one last opportunity to redeem itself. The blue brand exclusive, Clash of Champions, is around the corner and is a tremendous opportunity for the WWE to end 2017 with a bang.
An underwhelming main event has already been announced for the Clash of Champions PPV. But if we take a cue from how the past couple of PPV's panned out, Jinder Mahal Vs AJ Styles may end up getting scrapped at the last possible moment. Jinder Isn’t downright horrible by any means, but he does not deserve to be in the main event of a PPV. With so many insanely talented superstars like Sami Zayn, Dolph Ziggler, Rusev, Bobby Roode and Shinsuke Nakamura being criminally misused at the moment, the match cards of all the Smackdown PPV's could have been a lot better if these superstars were booked congruously.
So let’s forget the actual booking for one second and look at some of the matches that we would love to witness at Clash of Champions instead.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#1 The Usos vs The New Day
Despite the constant struggle that the blue brand experienced this year, the tag team division of SmackSown was always the saving grace on each and every show. The heated rivalry between the New Day and the Usos might very well be the best thing to happen to SmackDown in a very long time. But sadly, since their epic battle at Hell in a Cell, both the teams seem to be moving on to different feuds.
Many supremely talented tag teams like Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin, The Bludgeon Brothers, The Ascension, and Breezango are sitting on the sidelines and deserve an opportunity to showcase their craft. But it would be interesting if Usos and The New Day could collide inside the squared circle just one more time at Clash of Champions.
The phenomenal rivalry between these astounding tag teams is something no member of the WWE Universe can ever get bored of. Thus, one last battle between them at WWE Clash of Champions will make the PPV an absolute must watch.
#2 Natalya vs Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair
The women's revolution was a masterstroke by the WWE. The women’s division was nothing more than an eye candy before, but now it is hard to imagine a PPV without a couple of women’s matches on the match card. Kudos to all the hard working and insanely talented divas of the WWE for turning things around in such an effortless manner.
Three women who have been an integral part of this revolution right from the get-go are Charlotte, Natalya, and Becky Lynch. Charlotte Flair is the current champ and naturally, she has a target on her back. While Natalya deserves another shot at glory and Beck Lynch deserves the Numero Uno spot on SmackDown as well.
So the smart thing for the WWE to do will be to book a match between the three at Clash of Champions. The result will surely be a fast-paced and adrenaline-filled match between the three mainstays of the SmackDown’s women’s division.
#3 Sami Zayn vs Shinsuke Nakamura
Sami Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura are two of the best in-ring performers in the world today. Their tenure at NXT was nothing short of spectacular. A lot of credit should go to these two for moulding NXT into the force that it is today. Their abundance of talent and crazy fan following should have been enough to ensure that these superior athletes receive a massive push on the main roster as well. But sadly, WWE had other plans.
Both Sami Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura have been criminally misused by the WWE on Smackdown. Instead of taking the blue brand by storm, they are playing second fiddle to everyone else. Ignoring Shinsuke and Sami, and pushing someone like Jinder Mahal was a blasphemy committed by the WWE. But all is not lost, and a lot can still be done to salvage their floundering careers.
The best move that the WWE could make at this point in time will be to book a match between Sami Zayn and Shinsuke Nakamura at Clash of Champions. Sami and Shinsuke faced each other once on NXT last year, and it was a match for the ages. Their bout is still fondly remembered as one of the greatest matches in the young history of NXT.
Thus, a match between them at the upcoming PPV will not only make the event extraordinary, but it might also put these great athletes back on the map. Sami Zayn Vs Shinsuke Nakamura can be the five star that Smackdown needs, and the WWE Universe deserves.
#4 Randy Orton vs Kevin Owens
Randy Orton's legendary RKO's out of nowhere have already sealed his place in Hall of Fame. He is a thirteen time World Champion and has successfully carried the WWE on his shoulders for the past fifteen years. Orton is one of the greatest and biggest names to ever step inside a WWE ring. "The Viper" has done it all, but there are still a few dream matches that he needs to have in the WWE. A match against Kevin Owens being right at the top of the list.
Owens is an exceptional in-ring performer and is a legend in the making. He has captured the imagination of the WWE Universe and has stolen the show on numerous occasions. Thus, a match between two of the biggest names on the Smackdown roster is a potentially mouth-watering clash waiting to happen. Even though they have faced each other on RAW and SmackDown before, they are yet to lock horns on a PPV.
The recent back and forth between Orton And KO on social media makes this the ideal opportunity to book a match between the two at Clash of Champions. A hard-hitting and physical match between the two will ensure that the WWE ends 2017 with a bang.
#5 AJ Styles v/s Bobby Roode
Not so long ago, the names of AJ Styles and Bobby Roode were synonymous with TNA. Nobody could have imagined in their wildest dreams that a few years later both of them will be integral members of the WWE. Styles is already a two time WWE champion, while Roode is on his way to achieving glorious things for himself as well. Both of these phenomenal wrestlers are the undisputed future of the WWE for sure.
Styles going one on one against Roode has already happened innumerable times on TNA. Both of them had stellar chemistry inside the ring and delivered one instant classic after another during their stint with TNA.
But the two are yet to face each other in WWE, and the WWE Universe will erupt with joy if a match between them is announced. Thus, Clash of Champions is the perfect opportunity to book an AJ Vs Roode classic.
A Bobby Roode heel turn after losing to AJ Styles at Clash of Champions will the perfect way to end 2017.
