In 2020, Braun Strowman won his first singles title in WWE. After a victory over then-WWE Intercontinental Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura, in a non-title match, Strowman earned himself a future shot at the title.

Shortly afterward, Braun Strowman entered the WWE Royal Rumble in hopes of potentially becoming a double champion down the road. However, Strowman was unable to win the Rumble.
Despite already having won the Greatest Royal Rumble in 2018 and the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal in 2019, a Royal Rumble victory was missing from Braun Strowman's resume.

Nevertheless, after the pay-per-view, Braun Strowman shifted his focus towards the WWE Intercontinental Championship once again. On January 31, Strowman defeated Nakamura in another match, this time for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
Despite outside interferences from Sami Zayn and Cesaro, The Monster Among Men was able to win his first singles title in WWE. However, within the space of a few days, Strowman dropped the title to Zayn in a 3-on-1 Handicap Match.
