Mark Henry entered the 2008 Summerslam pay-per-view as the reigning ECW Champion. In this contest, he was set to defend his title against Matt Hardy.

As the match got underway, Matt Hardy immediately hit Henry with a quick Twist of Fate, followed by an attempted pinfall. However, Tony Atlas, Henry's manager at the time, pulled Hardy off and began to attack him. The referee had no choice but to call for the bell, giving Hardy the win due to disqualification. Despite losing the match, the DQ resulted in Henry retaining his title.
Following the match, Jeff Hardy raced out to even the odds for his brother, as they went after Henry and Atlas for a little revenge.
