Coming into the 2009 Summerslam pay-per-view, Christian was the reigning ECW Champion. However, William Regal was hell-bent on taking the title in an effort to cement his legacy. Just in case he found himself in a compromising situation, Regal was accompanied by Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Koslov.
Christian wasted no time, attacking Regal as he was trying to remove his robe. He then planted Regal with a Killswitch, ending the match and retaining his title.

Following the match, Christian was attacked by Koslov, Jackson, and Regal. All three men executed their respective finishers, leaving Christian laying in the ring badly beaten. Nonetheless, he still left with the title.
