Rey Mysterio is a future WWE Hall of Famer who was pushed as the "biggest little man" in WWE and had the tendency of accomplishing feats against all odds. He held numerous titles over the course of his career including the World Heavyweight Championship, WWE Championship and the Intercontinental Championship.
Rey made his triumphant return to the WWE after nearly 3 years at the 2018 Royal Rumble match where he entered the match at number 27 to a big ovation. He lasted for over nine minutes before being eliminated by Finn Balor. Even though his return was part of a one-time deal with WWE, there have been speculations of "The master of the 619" re-signing with the company. Rey is on record saying that there is a "big possibility" of him re-signing with WWE, following his incredible Royal Rumble return.
Here are the 5 potential feuds for Rey Mysterio should he re-sign with the WWE.
#5 Elias
Elias is one of the hottest stars on the WWE Raw roster right now. He already qualified for a spot at the Elimination Chamber match to determine who will face Brock Lesnar for the Universal title at Wrestlemania. His chances of winning this match are incredibly slim, but this could just be a big step towards turning him into a massive star.
Rey Mysterio has expressed interest in returning to the WWE and what better way to introduce himself back to the WWE Universe than interrupt a singing session by Elias. Mysterio feuding with Elias would help elevate Elias into a more prominent star. He most recently defeated Cena and Braun Strowman in a triple-threat match for the right to be the last entrant in the Elimination Chamber match. Elias has the potential to be a main event player and has proved his worth in his feud against the likes of John Cena.
A back and forth feud with "The Master of the 619" could be just what he needs to cement himself as one of the biggest stars of this generation.
#4 Dolph Ziggler
Dolph Ziggler is a two-time World Heavyweight Champion and a five-time Intercontinental Champion. He is, therefore, a pretty accomplished wrestler but has never really been given credit for all that he has accomplished inside the squared circle.
Ziggler returned at the Royal Rumble on January 28th as the surprise number 30 entrant in the men's Royal Rumble match. After eliminating Goldust, however, Ziggler was eliminated by Finn Bálor. He is currently scheduled to compete in a fatal five-way for the WWE Championship at Fastlane. AJ Styles is widely expected to win this match to go on and face the winner of the 2018 Royal Rumble, Shinsuke Nakamura.
Rey Mysterio and Dolph Ziggler had a great opening match at the 2009 SummerSlam PPV where Mysterio successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship. The two had very good chemistry and their feud for the Intercontinental Championship was an interesting one. This feud could be re-ignited if Mysterio indeed makes his much-anticipated return to WWE.
#3 The Miz
The Miz is the current Intercontinental Champion in his eighth reign and is the second longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history by combined days, behind Pedro Morales. The Miz has established himself as a big star in the WWE and is currently scheduled to compete inside the Elimination Chamber this Sunday.
In 2011, The Miz and Rey Mysterio feuded after Mysterio defeated Miz in a tournament finals to crown a new WWE Champion. During the August 10, 2011 episode of SmackDown, Mysterio defeated The Miz in a non-title match to earn a title match against Miz at SummerSlam that same year. However, The Miz had the last laugh when he pinned Mysterio after executing the "Skull Crushing Finale" in a back and forth match.
Mysterio could very well return and once again challenge The Miz for the coveted title in what would be a mouth-watering feud.
#2 AJ Styles
AJ Styles is arguably the most impressive wrestler on the WWE roster right now. He is "The Man" because he holds the prestigious WWE Championship title and is recognized by WWE as the first titleholder crowned outside of North America. Both PWI and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter voted him "Wrestler of the Year" for the year 2016.
Rey has expressed his desire to step back inside the ring for WWE following his successful cameo at Royal Rumble 2018, where he looked to be in great shape. He has recently gone on record saying he would like to have a match with Styles. A match between the two wrestling icons would be an exciting contest and a dream match for the WWE universe.
This contest would most likely happen in the next big event after WrestleMania. The WWE should indeed sign Mysterio and set up this potential match of the year, and a contest for the ages.
#1 Finn Balor
Bálor is a one-time NXT Champion, with his reign being the longest in the title's history with 293 days. He is also the quickest wrestler in WWE history to win a world title at 27 days following his main roster debut by becoming the inaugural Universal Champion at SummerSlam 2016.
It is worth noting that Finn Balor denied Rey Mysterio the chance of challenging for the Universal Title at WrestleMania when he eliminated him in the Royal Rumble, after just over 9 minutes. Balor went on to claim the title of "Iron-man" since he lasted for over 57 minutes and tossed over 4 men in the Royal Rumble match.
Perhaps Rey could feud with Balor in his quest for redemption, for being denied the chance to once again be in the main event at WrestleMania. A feud with Finn Balor would be a once-in-a-lifetime collision between two of the most accomplished wrestlers in history.
