It is no secret that unlike every other title in WWE, The Universal Championship is not defended every single month. It would be very disappointing for fans, if the Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar were not booked to compete in a match at the Royal Rumble, the second biggest show of the year.
If Finn Balor is not deemed as 'over' by Vince McMahon or even if (as per the other rumour that has surfaced) Mr McMahon wishes to protect Balor's 'Demon' gimmick, we can list several other contenders for the Beast's title.
For your benefit, we have named 5 opponents for Lesnar who can have competitive and interesting matches with the resident of Suplex City. Bear in mind that these men will be booked to lose, considering the supposed plan is for Roman Reigns to be the 'Beast Slayer' at WrestleMania 34.
What better way to begin a list, than with the master of every list ever created!
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#5 Chris Jericho
Every time Chris Jericho returns to WWE for yet another run, he is incredibly 'over' with the WWE Universe. Jericho will compete at the Tokyo Dome on January 4th and should be a bigger star than he ever was, following that cameo.
He would be a great opponent for the Beast and a good contender for the Universal Championship, too.
If Jericho were to return for yet another run, it would more sense to book him in a singles match against Lesnar rather than as an entrant in the Royal Rumble. This last run in the company was his best one thus far, his musical career is going stronger than ever before, and his book did pretty well.
Jericho and Lesnar can also play off their real-life heat, following Lesnar's beatdown on Randy Orton at SummerSlam last year. Jericho got in Lesnar's face, and some heated words were exchanged between the men.
#4 Bray Wyatt
It is difficult to believe that Bray Wyatt was the WWE Champion earlier this year. He seems only a shadow of the force he once was, and his character has just become diluted with time.
Starting right now, if Wyatt were positioned to become a top contender for the Universal Championship, he could be seen as a serious threat to the Beast. One way of achieving this, would be to align him with minions who could benefit from being the new Wyatt Family.
SAnitY, a faction that is currently in NXT, would be perfect for this role. Together, Wyatt and his new cohorts could run wild across the roster, creating new feuds and engaging storylines for the future.
Even if Wyatt were to lose against Lesnar at the Royal Rumble, it would be a big step up for him, and WWE would have a brand new main event performer, in their midst.
#3 Big Cass
Right before he got injured, it was clear that WWE certainly had huge plans for Big Cass, as a top-level singles heel. Could he return from injury to reclaim the top spot?
The 7-foot tall giant is certainly a superstar who physically matches up to the Beast in terms of height and stature. He could be a believable opponent for Lesnar, at least for the casual fans, who want a real Goliath vs. Goliath sort of encounter.
Some have felt that while Big Cass is competent in the ring, he does not have the personality to be a top-level star. This problem can be easily amended by booking him with a manager.
Much like in the case of Bray Wyatt, Big Cass could lose at the Royal Rumble 2018 and still come off looking like a bigger star than ever because of this main event push.
#2 Killian Dain
Killian Dain could be the next Braun Strowman. We're not just saying this because he's a huge, towering man who can make little children run away in fear, with just a look. We also believe he has incredible singles potential when he does break away from SAnitY.
Dain was the star of the recently concluded WarGames match, where he stole the show despite the presence of some of the best workers in the world, such as Adam Cole and Roderick Strong. He looks menacing and is definitely no slouch in the ring.
We wonder if Dain's due for a call-up, now that Drew McIntyre is injured, considering he was rumoured to be called up from NXT soon. Imagine the level of match a beast this menacing could have with Brock Lesnar.
#1 Kurt Angle
Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar are two men who are no strangers to one another, having had a multitude of clashes in the past, that are cherished to this day. As active performers in the RAW brand, could they recreate their incredible magic in the year 2017?
We would certainly like to assume so. Kurt Angle is getting back into the groove once again, and while he may no longer be the Kurt Angle of old, his psychology is still exemplary. Lesnar and Angle clashing again would bring back many old time viewers who may have lost touch with the current product.
And there you have it. Five worthy contenders for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in January 2018.
