Women's wrestling has made enormous strides over the course of the past few years, and with the recent Mae Young Classic, women's wrestling took another step forward in helping to elevate talent and create names soon to be known all around the world.
While Kairi Sane walked away as the winner of this inaugural women's tournament, a number of standouts brought their names to the forefront when it comes to professional wrestling and sports entertainment.
Even as the likes of Toni Storm, Piper Niven, and Candice LeRae turned heads during the tournament, there already exists in WWE, a contingent of women that are so good that they exceed what most of their male counterparts do in the ring. Their speed, technical skill, and risk-taking have elevated their popularity with fans to the level of their male counterparts.
Who are they and which ones stand above the guys? Here are five female Superstars who are better than most of the male Superstars.
#5. Becky Lynch
The inaugural WWE Smackdown Live Women's champion stands above many of her male counterparts when it comes to ability inside the ring. Lynch may not have been well-known among fans when she joined NXT, but no one can deny what she has become.
Her competitive matches against Sasha Banks in NXT and her ascent to the top of the women's division on Smackdown demonstrate that she has elevated herself in a way most of her male counterparts would love to do.
If anything can be assured when it comes to Lynch, it is that her admirable work ethic has made her a crucial cog in the development of the other women on the roster. Much like Natalya, her role is that of someone who can be counted on to not only have a great match but tell a great story as well. Her feuds with the aforementioned Natalya, as well as Alexa Bliss, suggest that she is more than worthy of consistently competing for the championship.
#4. Naomi
Sometimes a talent will fly under the radar. While many appreciate what they do, sometimes they aren't given the time to truly showcases everything of which they are capable. This has been the case with Naomi, WWE Hall of Famer Rikishi's daughter in law, prior to her ascent to the top of the Smackdown Live women's division. She has consistently showcased her skills in her matches, and when she was part of the Funkadactyls, fans became aware of some of the things that she was capable of doing in the ring.
However, as more time has passed, the audience has seen her use a variety of different moves that demonstrate technical prowess and true athletic ability, whether it's her top rope split legged moonsault, or her ability to make any opponent tap out. Naomi can do some things that must make her male counterparts marvel. Fans can be proud that her rise was accomplished through hard work and continued dedication. Her commitment has proven that she is deserving of being at or near the top of the women's division.
#3. Charlotte
She calls herself The Queen, and Ms. Flair certainly has talent that allows her to stand atop the women's division. Whether on Raw or Smackdown Live, Charlotte has come in and competed with the best in the division, and walked away victorious more times than not.
Her rivalry with Sasha Banks for the Raw women's championship allowed her to show she can do some things in the ring that many of her contemporaries cannot.
Whether it's her strength, or a demonstration of athleticism by doing a top rope moonsault to the floor, Flair can do things her legendary father never did. Her twist on the figure four leglock, incorporating a bridge into the move, also shows that athleticism, not to mention creativity.
Despite not capturing the championship since arriving on Smackdown Live, Charlotte has had meaningful rivalries against the likes of Carmella, Tamina, and Natalya. She is one talent that stands tall in her division in a way few men do in theirs.
#2. Natalya
She is a third-generation superstar and has been owed her due on-screen for a long time. Nattie Neidhart is a veteran WWE for over a decade, and in that time has helped to elevate the roster that she has been a proud part of.
Whether she has been walking alongside Beth Phoenix as the Divas of Destruction or facing Charlotte for the NXT Women's championship, Natalya has helped make the women's division what it is today.
A consummate professional, being champion wasn't something that was a necessity for her. Her long-standing commitment to making the division important, and to elevate the women has helped make the women's divisions on Smackdown Live and Raw great. It was only a matter of time before she was once again given a championship.
#1. Asuka
She is called the Empress of Tomorrow, but her superiority to her male counterparts is unquestionably evident today. Asuka has blazed a trail her male and female counterparts would be envious of.
Her undefeated streak of over 500 days was a marvel and a great accomplishment. Her matches against the likes of Raw women's division competitors Bayley, Nia Jax, Dana Brooke and Emma were only the tip of the iceberg; look at whom she has defeated since then: Ember Moon, Nikki Cross, Peyton Royce, Billie Kay and Ruby Riot.
While she may have been outweighed by Jax, that didn't mean she couldn't still knock her out with one of her lethal kicks. As the longest reigning NXT champion of any kind has proven that her fierce fighting nature is something anyone competitor on any roster should be intimidated by. Her success, fighting style, and value in the ring clearly demonstrate how much more dominant she is than her male counterparts.
