The WWE Extreme Rules PPV was birthed out of the Extreme Rules match concept, which of course was used during the days of the WWE ECW brand.

When the ECW brand officially ended in WWE, the Extreme Rules match lived on and was utilized on Raw and Smackdown Live, before becoming its own PPV event.
Despite the Extreme Rules PPV event carrying an ECW-esque moniker, many fans have felt the show to be less than extreme in recent years, and WWE has the chance to change that this Sunday night.
In addition to booking several hardcore style matches for the PPV this Sunday night, should the PPV end with Brock Lesnar hitting a devastating F5 on Becky Lynch, the PPV would earn the word "Extreme" in its name.
