On Sunday, Braun Strowman faces the man he sent to the hospital in an ambulance. The same man who retired the Undertaker and the same man that’s going achieve greater things in his career. Roman Reigns will make his return to WWE programming in a mega-showdown with the former Wyatt Family member, and it’s going to be colossal.
As of right now, the bookies have made Roman Reigns the favourite to win the bout. That’s not what we as a majority want to hear. Anything but a Braun Strowman win at Payback would be a shame and lead to several adverse knock-on effects.
Here are 5 reasons why Braun Strowman should beat Roman Reigns at Payback.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#5 To give him THAT one win
Braun Strowman may be one of the most dominant superstars we’ve ever seen, but he still hasn’t had THAT one major win. Yes, he’s beaten the likes of Big Show and Mark Henry in his run, but they aren’t main event calibre stars anymore, and he needs bigger scalps. And in today’s current climate there’s no bigger scalp than a clean win over Roman Reigns.
How else do you turn a monster heel into a star? Have him beat the guy everyone thinks is the chosen one, and do it cleanly. If not, Strowman will be looked at in the same way all other monsters are; they’re dominant, but in no time they’ll be jobbers to the main event babyfaces. It’s happened to Rusev, Bray Wyatt, Mark Henry and the Big Show. Braun Strowman is way too talented to suffer such similar treatment.
#4 To even the odds
Roman Reigns already has one unjust victory over the 7-footer, and we do not need another one. At the B-standard PPV Fast Lane, The Big Dog inexplicably pinned Braun Strowman, CLEAN. The world could not believe what had happened, and I’m not even sure that the creative writers understood what they were doing. The decision made no sense at the time, and it still doesn’t add up today.
Now it’s time to right the biggest wrong of the past and have Braun Strowman get his 1v1 victory back. Roman Reigns just beat The Undertaker for goodness sake; let someone else have some shine, Vince.
#3 He’s the most over wrestler today
Regardless of whether he’s portrayed as a heel or not, when Braun Strowman tipped Roman Reigns over in an ambulance, he became the biggest babyface on the roster. Vince may try to ignore it, but Roman gets booed out of the building more than anyone nowadays and when Strowman put him on the shelf, the public instantly fell in love with him.

Now, the Monster Among Men is the centrepiece of the show week in and week out. That’s how it is when you’re a main eventer in the eyes of the public; you start the show and end it. You also ensure the whole WWE Universe is talking about you. Strowman, not Roman is that guy now, and the reactions for him are getting louder and louder by the week. Let’s not ruin that at Payback; let’s enhance it with a monstrous win.
#2 The fans are sick of Roman winning
We’ve progressed from the #CenaWins era to the kingdom of #RomanRules. PPV after PPV, big match after big match, there only seems to be one winner. Only one hand seems to be getting raised, and fans are gradually growing sick of seeing it. There’s nothing more demoralising for a fan than the fact that a person you despise is going to win regardless of whether you watch the product or not. You’re powerless to alter it and know there’s nothing you can do to change Vince’s mind.
Roman winning on the big stage not only creates a toxic atmosphere amongst the fanbase, but it also sours things in the locker room. Wrestlers stop giving their best because they know in spite of what they do, it’ll never be appreciated as much as Roman's work.
This is why a Braun Strowman victory is crucial for wrestling; he has to stop a disturbing trend for the WWE. The win would be for the fans and all those who support change. Do it for us, Braun.
#1 To make him legit title contender
If the rumours are true, Roman Reigns is set to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34. In the meantime, the Beast needs a worthy opponent to fill time before Summerslam let alone WrestleMania. As the current WWE Universal Champion is on vacation for a while, the WWE must continue to build up Braun Strowman as the most feared no.1 contender in recent history.
As the man that just retired the biggest name in professional wrestling, Roman Reigns has an incredible amount of momentum attached to his character. If Strowman were to beat Reigns after what he just achieved, it would automatically promote him to the top of the company alongside Brock Lesnar.
