The audience, spell-bound by Paul Heyman’s oratorical grandiosity, may chant for Suplex City or count along as he manhandles his opponents with a barrage of suplexes, but that still doesn’t detract from the fact that Brock Lesnar is the WWE’s biggest heel today.
With only Kevin Owens on Raw and AJ Styles on SmackDown who can be considered as heel main event level players, the WWE faces an acute dearth of legitimate heels that can generate genuine heat within the audience; conversely, it is of little wonder that the WWE also struggles to get other Superstars over as babyfaces too.
He may only work a handful of dates – that too ‘lazily’ – in a year, but Brock Lesnar’s ominous skill-set coupled with Heyman’s forceful verbiage makes for compelling viewing.
And his occasional visits to the Octagon that result in the mauling of some legitimate UFC Heavyweight Fighter, only serve to pad up the aura that he already exudes.
On that note, here are 5 reasons why Brock Lesnar is the most realistic heel to be reckoned with, in the WWE today.
#5 A ‘mercenary’ schedule
WWE Superstars take pride in the fact that they put their bodies on the line for our viewing pleasure, for up to 300 days in a year. And this has almost meshed into the delineating factor that defines a prototypical pro-wrestler – one of paying his/her dues.
Brock Lesnar and his monstrous frame, inspite of being the only man alive to be the NCAA, WWE and UFC Heavyweight Champion, does not fit into that description at all.
He comes and goes as he pleases, and has even publicly affirmed that his loyalties lie with the weight of the purse, rather than the thrill of pursuing his passion of performing for sold-out crowds week-in and week-out.
While all this works out well and good for a man that shuns the rigours of perennial travel and is has marketed himself into a brand that can still earn hefty sums of money while working limited dates, it hardly inspires good will from his colleagues or peers.
#4 Lack of passion
Brock Lesnar’s in-ring style, that has increasingly come under scrutiny over the past month or two, has been characterised as lazy, exceedingly stiff and reckless. While these are adjectives that WWE Superstars would be loath to be associated with, Brock Lesnar – on the other hand – revels in that space.
He has made no bones about the fact that his allegiance lies with the width of his purse, and that he possesses no passion as such for the industry. His working style in the ring only backs that notion up.

It’s clear that Brock Lesnar doesn’t care enough for the squared circle, as indeed he doesn’t for the Octagon, which generally leads to nuclear heat amongst the fans that see the other WWE Superstars and fighters shed their blood, sweat, and tears in pursuit of greatness in their respective disciplines.
Only, at far lesser remuneration that what Lesnar demands, and quite distastefully for many, also receives.
#3 Characterization
Every time Brock Lesnar decides to grace the WWE with his presence, he is touted as the ‘Conqueror’, the ‘One in 21-1’ or the Beast Incarnate – amongst many other ominous and dangerous sounding monikers – by his advocate Paul Heyman.
And unfailingly, he leaves behind a trail of destruction to justify the lofty praises that Heyman sings.
The Undertaker, John Cena, Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton are some of the Superstars that can attest to that. While the audience cheers Lesnar sometimes, purely for the awe-inspiring badassery, it is also painfully obvious that the bulk of the names that he has dismantled are babyfaces.
Pro-wrestling has a term to describe such a character; a character that indiscriminately lays all who step to him, to waste. And it’s called a monster heel.
#2 Disregard for authority
Destroying the Authority and its minions (J&J Security) to get to Seth Rollins after he cost Lesnar the main event and the WWE Title at WrestleMania 31, was something that the WWE Universe thoroughly enjoyed.
Albeit, that was more due to the fact that they were tiring of the incessent power-laundering and underhanded ways that had earmarked the Authority.
Beneath the surface though, the undercurrent of disregard for the powers-that-be that was displayed by Lesnar went quietly unnoticed. There have been momentary glimpses of it since, like when he single-handedly dismantled J&J Security’s car, or took out his fustration on an innocent and hapless Michael Cole. .
But never was it in full display as when he unnecessarily laid out Shane McMahon with an F5 to close out SummerSlam, just as the SmackDown commissioner ran to the ring to ensure the safety of a profusely bleeding Randy Orton.
#1 His defeat will crown a new top babyface
Let’s face it.
The rub of beating the Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and chewing up other top Superstars like John Cena, Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton, has been adding to the aura of invincibility that precedes the Beast Incarnate. His advocate, Paul Heyman, has ensured that much thus far.
But all of this hype and hoopla has to build up to something substantial in the future. Even the Undertaker, whose streak many believed was untouchable, was broken. And in due time, so will the legend of Brock Lesnar.

The only question that remains is who that Superstar would be. What is unquestionable, however, is that the momentum that appends itself to the conquest of a thus far nigh inconquerable beast, would propel the Superstar in question into the stratosphere.
Coincidentally almost, John Cena’s nearly departed boots remain awaiting for the heir-apparent.
