AEW Dynamite's debut was a success. The show attracted 1.409 million total viewers across 2 hours. There were some botches, but overall, the show delivered. Dynamite had fast-paced action, a new AEW Women's Champion was crowned, MJF continued his winning streak, and there was a shocking debut by former WWE World Champion Jack Swagger aka Jake Hager.
The beauty of the show was that it was simplistic in its presentation. There was wall-to-wall action with little intervals for the crowd to catch their breath. Yet, the show went along at a good clip and didn't seem to do anything to bore viewers. There was something going on all the time.
Perhaps, the biggest moment of the night came towards the end of the show, which seemed organic and never felt forced. Everything seemed real and worked together to make sense of the current storyline. The arrival of Jake Hager certainly received the required effect it wanted from the crowd and the viewers at home.
The result was a new heel stable, which undoubtedly left fans excited in the weeks to come. Here are 5 reasons why Chris Jericho's new AEW heel stable will be a ratings draw.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#5 A diverse cast of AEW Wrestlers
There is a lot to like about this new stable. Cody and Brandi Rhodes have spoken in interviews about the importance of diversity being an essential part of their company. With Chris Jericho's new stable, fans get exactly that.
Sammy Guevara is the young upstart and Cuban-American. Santino and Ortiz are the possibly the best tag team in the world and are of Puerto-Rican descent. Chris Jericho is the grizzled veteran from Canada and practically the Ric Flair of the group. Hager is an outspoken Trump supporter in real-life and his debut established him as the enforcer of the group.
In a sense, the group has something to offer for everyone.
#4 More heel Chris Jericho
This version of Chris Jericho is the best that wrestling fans have seen in years. He's funny, arrogant, and can still deliver inside the squared circle. He may eventually risk coming across as a 'cool' heel, but so far, that hasn't been the case. It only goes to show the genius of the man known as Y2J to millions of fans across the world.
Jericho's promos are amazing and the former WWE Superstar is able to think on his feet. For instance, look at the moment when Jericho took the wiener that was thrown into the ring. He took the mic and demanded to know who threw it in the ring. No one else could have pulled that off.
Some fans have complained whether it was smart putting the AEW Title on Jericho, but his moments with the company have been electric, so far. One could argue that his current gimmick is probably his best ever. While his in-ring ability has shown minimal signs of wear and tear, he's still delivering solid matches.
Imagine! This heel version of Jericho started because AEW refused to "Thank Him" for everything he had done for the company. Now, he might actually get his revenge.
#3 There is a resemblance to The Four Horsemen of WCW
If wrestling fans are aware of who The Four Horsemen are, they will realize the group was probably the best wrestling stable in the history of professional wrestling. They were a huge draw that was the centerpiece of both the NWA and WCW. One could argue that they were bigger than the nWo and D-X. Cody Rhodes already has two of the original Horsemen in AEW in Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard.
Cody Rhodes is a student of wrestling history and his fondness for WCW is integral to that. His father lived and breathed WCW, as well as NWA. Cody is continuing that history by creating a new heel stable reminiscent to the greatest heel stable of his father's era. Heroes need villains and that is how professional wrestling has always worked.
Each person will have a role to play in the weeks to come and that's quite evident in the way they have been picked. The Elite (Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks) are the heart and soul of AEW for all intents and purposes. Jericho and his new "Alpha" team could probably dominate AEW Dynamite in the weeks to come. Fans will have to tune in to find out what happens.
#2 Winning all the gold in AEW
When Santino and Ortiz debuted at AEW All Out, many fans were overjoyed. Their moniker as the best tag team on the planet is true. They were one of the best things going in Impact Wrestling week after week. It only makes sense that they will make a big bang now that they have arrived in AEW.
It should be noted that the team is not part of the AEW Tag Team Tournament that has been announced. Going back to their recent alliance with Chris Jericho, it makes sense that they will challenge the team that wins that tournament. Why go through an entire tournament when you can destroy the teams who might lose on their way to the gold?
Santana and Ortiz can play very good heels and being in AEW allows them to compete with the best tag teams in the world including; The Young Bucks, The Lucha Bros, Private Party and The Jurassic Express. It all depends on the kind of booking that the team receives on their way to championship gold.
Look for Santino Ortiz to win the gold sometime in the future.
#1 Jack Swagger aka Jake Hager
Jake Hager's arrival in AEW was rumored before AEW Dynamite premiered, but it created an impact and got people talking about it once the debut was officially revealed. Jake Hager's undefeated streak in Bellator has helped raise his portfolio in the pro wrestling industry and certified him as a legitimate fighter.
More importantly, when compared to the rest of AEW, with the exception of Luchasaurus, he is easily one of the biggest men on the roster. That makes him a beast. While Jake Hager is no Brock Lesnar, he is the closest thing the company has to a legit MMA fighter and it opens the doors for MMA fighters signing with AEW in the future.
Considering the fact that he is now part of Chris Jericho's stable, the clear role that he has been given is similar to what Arn Anderson had and that was as 'The Enforcer.' If Swagger is pushed as an unstoppable force, then AEW has an entertaining wrestler who could build an audience for himself and the stable in the weeks to come.
