WWE needs a top villain and while the company will eventually be forced to establish a long term one, Shane McMahon is a great stop-gap heel for the time being. In fact, between him being the boss's son and his frequent beatdowns of top babyfaces over the last couple of months, the man has been garnering nuclear heat.

The only logical conclusion to this scenario is to put the WWE Title on McMahon and have him run roughshod over the blue brand for a while. That way, WWE can continue to build upon the heat that's already been established, the people associated with McMahon can garner their own heat for later on and it creates a huge opportunity for whoever beats him.
In the end, fans are going to want to see Shane McMahon finally get what's coming to him and WWE pumping the brakes on the idea robs the WWE Universe of a chance to see just that. It will also result in a lackluster ending to McMahon's run as a top heel, which would truly render his turn meaningless.
