Even though WrestleMania is behind us, the WWE product isn't in the doldrums just yet. The Superstar Shake-up has given both Raw and SmackDown a shot in the arm, meaning that there are a number of matches with significant consequences at Backlash.
So, without any further ado, here are five rumours you need to know before the show.
#1 Vince McMahon still sees Roman Reigns, not Braun Strowman, as WWE's top star
During a recent episode of the Backstage in WWE Podcast, Brad Shephard said: "As for who ‘the guy’ is, there’s been no indication internally that it’s no longer Roman Reigns.”
Even though Strowman is presently more popular than Reigns, it looks like Vince McMahon still sees the Shield powerhouse as WWE's top babyface.
#2 Possible spoilers for two title matches
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, Carmella will probably retain the SmackDown Live Women's Championship since she just recently won the title.
Johnson also suggested that the same logic could apply to Jeff Hardy, who has been pushed strongly ever since his return to television. Jinder Mahal, who has been involved in the United States title picture, could interfere in the match between Hardy and Orton at Backlash.
#3 AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura expected to be the main event
According to WrestleVotes, an insider who occasionally posts backstage information on Twitter, AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura is expected to close out Backlash.
Apparently, Samoa Joe vs. Roman Reigns was considered for the position, but the big plans in place for that match were axed which means that it couldn't end with a dirty finish,
#4 Jeff Hardy teases the return of his old theme song
Jeff Hardy recently teased the return of the entrance theme that he used during his last WWE run, "No More Words by Endeverafter, on his Instagram page. Could he walk out to this song, which clearly fits him better as a singles competitor than his current theme, at Backlash?
#5 Will another title match be added to the show?
According to a report from Dave Melter of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a Cruiserweight title clash between defending champion Cedric Alexander and Buddy Murphy could be added to Backlash at the last minute.
WWE reportedly filmed an angle with the 205 lbs title, further fuelling speculation that a Cruiserweight Championship match could take place at Backlash.
