WWE Money in the Bank 2016 holds the unique distinction of having every member of The Shield hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the same night.
Earlier on in the broadcast, Dean Ambrose won the Money in the Bank contract for the first time in his WWE career. Ambrose outlasted Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, Cesaro and Alberto Del Rio to become the new 'Mr. Money in the Bank.'
The closing moments of the match saw Ambrose cause Kevin Owens to fall off a ladder onto another ladder that was bridged between the original ladder and the steel ring post. This allowed The Lunatic Fringe to retrieve the Money in the Bank briefcase and win the match.
Less than an hour later, Dean Ambrose became the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
The main event of the pay-per-view saw Roman Reigns defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against the returning Seth Rollins. The closing moments of the match saw Rollins counter a spear attempt by Reigns into a Pedigree for a stunning near-fall.
However, Rollins followed this up with another Pedigree to pin Reigns and capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the second time in his career. But Rollins' ecstasy would be short-lived.
Dean Ambrose's music suddenly began to play. Seth Rollins anticipated Ambrose's entrance but was shockingly attacked from behind by The Lunatic Fringe who utilized the Money in the Bank briefcase as a weapon. Ambrose then cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, hit Dirty Deeds and pinned Rollins to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion for the first time.
