Although many of the Superstars and teams in today's WWE seem to have the IT factor, it really takes something special to break the glass ceiling and get a sustained push.
Follow Sportskeeda for the latest WWE news, rumors and all other wrestling news.
Due to the overcrowding on both rosters, it is nigh on impossible to really stand out and because of this, some deserving Superstars are often overlooked. This leads to them being dropped to the mid-card and the WWE universe not understanding why.
Sometimes, it seems the best option is for the Superstar to cut ties with the WWE and go back to the independent scene. This allows them to rebuild as a character like Cody has, and so when they get so big that the WWE comes calling again, they will have much more leverage and a big enough fan base for a push.
One such example of this is Drew Mcintyre. McIntyre first debuted in the WWE with a gimmick of being Vince McMahon's 'Chosen One' and with this sort of gimmick you'd think the sky was the limit.
This was not meant to be as McIntyre's in-ring ability, mic skills and overall character work were not up to scratch.
He then, however, left the WWE and dominated the indie scene gaining experience along the way that turned him into the Superstar he is today, complete with a big following, developed move set and great mic work.
In this article, we look at 5 Superstars and teams who have the ability to follow this same formula to success due to either needing character development or a character refresh due to becoming stale.
#5 Tyler Breeze
Tyler Breeze had somewhat of a cult following in NXT and it looked like he was going to have a successful run in WWE but something just didn't come together.
His first feud in the main roster was with Dolph Ziggler. It looked as if this might be Ziggler's way of passing the torch to Breeze as they have similar cocky heel traits.
Although Breeze did go over Ziggler and had some good in-ring performances for some reason, creative did not get behind Breeze and the next thing we knew he was in a comedy tag team with Fandango called the Fashion Police and although they provided some comic relief, this has to be seen as a fall from grace.
Lately, Breeze has appeared on NXT and is welcomed warmly as he drifts back into the character he once was for one night only but why stop there?
With AEW pulling out all the stops to sign high caliber superstars, Breeze is the kind of guy that could headline events for the brand and at the same time gain the fanfare required to get a real push the day WWE once again come calling!
#5 Curtis Axel
Here we have another Superstar who seemed destined for big things but for some reason or another just has not met their potential.
After being called up the main roster, Curtis Axel scored pinfalls over some of the biggest and best that WWE has to offer, including John Cena.
Pretty soon after this, he was the Intercontinental champion and paired up with Paul Heyman of all people, which is a massive rub considering the caliber of superstars Paul usually manages. When he dropped the title to Big E, things started going downhill fast.
After being dropped by Heyman, the son of Mr Perfect was then placed in an ill-fated tag team with Ryback that never achieved any title reigns and, although he had a tag title reign recently with Bo Dallas he has been an enhancement talent for years.
A Superstar with his in-ring ability and the fact he is the son of an absolute legend would surely be a massive draw in the independent scene and perhaps in a few years he could return and fulfill the potential he clearly has!
#3 Gallows & Anderson
When Gallows and Anderson made their shocking debuts on RAW, it seemed as if they may have finally arrived at the top. It looked as if they would be seen as top guys and they were featured heavily in the main event scene as they reformed 'The Club' alongside AJ Styles.
The clashes between them and the Usos were great but then, as sometimes happens in the WWE, AJ Styles was moved to Smackdown and this narrative - and all their momentum - was stopped dead in its tracks.
Although they did go on to win the Raw Tag Team titles, their run was pretty forgettable and once they dropped the titles to the Hardy Boyz at WrestleMania they were directionless.
The Club were a major force in NJPW and Dave Meltzer reports their WWE contract is due up in the early parts of this year. There is no reason why they can't return to NJPW and pick up where they left off and then consider a return when the WWE starts to treat its tag division as more of a priority.
#2 The Revival
The Revival are a real throwback and you have got to think if this was the Attitude Era, they would be main contenders in the tag team diving alongside the likes of the Dudleys, Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian.
This is not the Attitude Era; it is an era where in-ring ability alone is not enough to get you over on the main roster and although they are featured heavily in tag title matches, they always come up short.
A team with this kind of show stealing match potential could be a huge coup for the new AEW and without a doubt, they could be at the forefront of the tag division much as they were in NXT.
Gallows and Anderson are an excellent example of how teams of this calibre seem to be more suited to the independent scene so perhaps Dash & Dawson should throw the dice, develop their characters and build there fanbase outside of the big leagues.
#1 Zack Ryder
Zack Ryder is a man that has consistently found ways to get over in the WWE without the help of creative. For some reason though, they will not get behind the Long Island Ice Z.
Zack may have had a few feel-good stories culminating in him winning a mid-card title but he would never hold it for and soon go back to being an enhancement talent. You can tell that by his rants and social media activity that he feels he is worth more and a lot of people agree.
The problem with Ryder is his character has rarely changed. Much like we have seen with Dolph Ziggler, fans will only support you for so long before becoming bored of your character. When creative book you to lose all the time, they will just assume their guy is never getting a push and move on to the next one.
Although Ryder had his Wrestlemania moment when he shockingly won the IC title in a ladder match, he went on to drop the title days late. This kind of booking shows how the WWE view him and that is not a guy that can carry the ball and run with it.
There is nothing wrong with Ryder as an in-ring performer, his move set is exciting and he knows how to talk. This is kind of criteria you need to be a star and he could be the top guy in IMPACT! or AEW.
To be honest, it feels like only then he could return and truly be treated like the top guy he dreams of being by both fans that are bored of him and creative that don't know how to use him!
