Recently, there have strong rumors doing the rounds that WWE could be hosting one-off tournament comprised of Latin American competitors (in the same manner of the Cruiserweight Classic, UK Championship, and the Mae Young Classic). While nothing official has been announced yet, it really looks like its going to happen. So when it does happen, who will participate? Who will represent Lucha Libre to the WWE Universe? The real question is, who is most qualified to do so?
5: Fenix
Rey Fenix is another superstar that has proven himself in both the US and Mexico. Wrestling for both Mexican and American independents, like Lucha Underground and PWG, Fenix is supremely confident when he steps in that ring, no matter what country he's in. He often teams with his real life brother, Penta Zero M (we'll get to him), as the Lucha Brothers, and while that sounds a little cheesy, it's actually pretty awesome. Fenix's timing and pacing in the ring are flawless, working the lucha style while still giving the audience time to gush in anticipation. He'd be a great addition to this tournament.
5: Flamita
Flamita is quickly becoming a very popular luchadore in America. Having wrestled for several American independents--most notably PWG in California--as well was AAA, Mexico's second-largest pro wrestling federation, Flamita has proved he can tear the house down in both cultural contexts. Flamita is everything you want in a Luchador: athletic, creative, and charismatic. He's be a perfect addition to this tournament. He pairs nicely with almost any style, and would be an incredible match-up with anyone else on this list. Such as...
#3 Pengon Zero M
Penta is legitimately one of the most charismatic wrestlers on the planet. Seriously. Have you ever seen him wrestle? You should. He's worked for PWG (sensing a theme here?) and Lucha Underground, just to name a couple, and he shines wherever he goes. His catchphrase, "Cero Miedo," is Spanish for "Zero Fear," and he lives up to it. His creativity, and ability to work a crowd, are astounding. He has an innate talent to make anyone invested in his matches. It would honestly be a disappointment if he were absent from this show.
2: Volador, Jr.
Volador, Jr. is one of the top guys for Mexico's top promotion, CMLL (also the oldest promotion on the planet). He's one of the most underrated wrestlers out there today. He belongs in the top ten best in the world right now, but is often overlooked because Mexican wrestling is often overlooked. He proved himself on the worldwide stage, performing in New Japan Pro Wrestling's Best of the Super Juniors tournament. He's freakishly fast. More importantly, he's brilliant at putting together matches. He knows when to place big moves, and how to get the most out of any match-up. He would be number one on this list, if it weren't for someone that has little bit more starpower...
1: Rey Mysterio
What else could possibly be said about Rey Mysterio that hasn't already been said? He made his name first in Mexico, performing in AAA in its early days, and made his way to WCW in the United States. There, he revolutionized what Americans thought of high-flying offense. Along with the other legends in that stacked Cruiserweight Division (seriously, its crazy to think back on), he put on classic after classic against the likes of Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, and Chris Jericho. And this was all before he even stepped inside a WWE ring. He's a Royal Rumble winner, and former World Heavyweight Champion, with a WrestleMania main event under his belt. And him being in this tournament would not only put a lot more eyes on it, it would give Rey a chance to make a future Latino star for the company.
Who do you think should be in the tournament? Who was I wrong about? Who did I miss? Let me know in the comments!
