In 2019, there will be many opportunities for new tag teams to be formed in WWE.
The Tag Team divisions on both Raw & Smackdown are currently stacked right now, but there are multiple teams that don't have a lot of credibility.
We've seen teams like The Ascension that should've been built up more stronger, but instead, they've been on the losing side in matches against the more established tag teams.
We've even had teams like Epico & Primo that have simply been forgotten about. The fact of the matter is, tag teams aren't being used properly due to the fact that creative doesn't seem to have a direction to take these teams in.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
So here are 5 potential long-lasting tag teams that should be put together in 2019.
#5 Akira Tozawa & Kassius Ohno
Kassius Ohno could be a great option to team up with The Stamina Monster.
We have yet to see Kassius Ohno on the main roster, as he has been in NXT for a long period of time. The best way to introduce Ohno to Raw or Smackdown would be by bringing him for a new tag team. This is because Ohno is a tag team specialist- as we've seen before with Cesaro back in their ROH days, when they were competing as Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli.
On the other hand, Akira Tozawa has been regularly competing on 205 Live in the Cruiserweight division. We've seen Tozawa briefly with Titus Worldwide as he has appeared on Raw as well, but nothing really came out of it. He has also previously held the Cruiserweight Championship, but the title reign wasn't anything special.
Pairing Tozawa & Ohno up would be an interesting choice because they could potentially play the roles of a student and mentor. Tozawa could possibly learn so much from Ohno, in terms of developing his English and evolving his character.
The fans have shown that they do indeed like Tozawa, as he always receives pops from the fans whilst he is wrestling. He also has an "AH" chant that the fans scream with him, when it's used efficiently. Ohno has shown that he can play the role of a face or heel on NXT, feuding with the likes of Velveteen Dream & Matt Riddle.
This team could also feature more of a long-term plan, and if the WWE did ever want to split them up- they could easily go down the road of Ohno turning on his student in Tozawa. This would allow for the two men to have a personal feud, with the student defeating his mentor- and Tozawa being put over. But in order for that to happen, they would have to win some tag team gold in order to increase their credibility.
#4 Tye Dillinger & Shelton Benjamin
At #4 comes the pairing of two men who have currently been floundering on the Smackdown roster- Tye Dillinger & Shelton Benjamin.
When Tye Dillinger made his debut on Smackdown, everybody expected big things from him. The Perfect 10 was very over on NXT with his "10!" chants, but unfortunately, things just haven't worked out for Dillinger as he has been regularly booked to lose.
On the other hand, Shelton Benjamin is also someone who has been lacking direction as of late. His return was highly anticipated, and we saw him paired up with Chad Gable- but that was also a tag team that didn't go anywhere either. Benjamin also holds victories over Daniel Bryan & Randy Orton, but WWE never did anything to capitalise on the momentum.
The reason why the team of Dillinger & Benjamin makes sense is due to the fact that they are two veterans on the Smackdown roster who haven't had the best success.
There are two different directions that you could take this pairing. First of all, you could have the duo wrestling as heels- with both men being grizzled veterans who are sick of seeing young talent be pushed ahead of them.
But you could also have them as faces, with two veterans who simply want to be given a second chance in the Tag Team division. The fans could get behind this storyline for certain, as Dillinger & Benjamin have proven that they can get good reactions as faces in the past.
Either way, it would be the perfect opportunity to use two experienced superstars to the best of their abilities.
#3 Mustafa Ali & Cedric Alexander
Up next, is the pairing of Mustafa Ali & Cedric Alexander. We've already witnessed the debut of Mustafa Ali on Smackdown, as he went toe to toe with Daniel Bryan in an amazing match. And then the following week on Smackdown, we saw Ali pin Bryan in a Tag Team match which suggests that WWE see something special in him.
Ali has also demonstrated his fantastic story telling abilities in the ring during his matches against the likes of Hideo Itami & Buddy Murphy. On the other hand, Alexander hasn't appeared on the main roster yet but he is a former WWE Cruiserweight Champion. Funnily enough, Ali was the superstar that Alexander defeated at Wrestlemania 34 to win the title.
Both men are The Heart & The Soul of 205 Live, and we've seen many shows of respect between the two. They have history, and it's positive history that could be the reasoning to form a tag team. Ali & Alexander would benefit hugely from teaming up, as they could be a high flying team that can steal the show on Smackdown every week.
Mustafa Ali has also proven that he has great promo abilities, as we've seen with his creative video packages on 205 Live during the Cruiserweight Championship tournament. We saw a personal side to Alexander, but the promos were not as thrilling as Ali's.
These two men could cut video packages in the same style of Ali's creative work, and we could see excellent stuff that could hone the promo abilities of Alexander.
The pairing of Ali & Alexander could also be perfect foes for more technical teams like Cesaro & Sheamus from The Bar, or they could even be underdogs to the heavy hitters such as The Bludgeon Brothers & Sanity.
#2 Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder
This is a tag team that we have seen in the WWE before, as Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder previously teamed up when they were part of the Edgeheads. They even went onto become WWE Tag Team Champions, as they ran the Smackdown brand whilst being under the guidance of The Rated R Superstar himself, Edge.
However, in 2018, Hawkins seems to be floundering on the Raw roster. He has been on a singles losing streak from the moment he walked back into the WWE, and he has played the role of a sympathetic figure. But it doesn't seem like he's going to gain a win as there are more superstars that are simply above him in terms of talent.
On the other hand, Zack Ryder hasn't even appeared on a single episode of Raw this year and that is upsetting due to the fact that he has a huge fanbase. Ryder used to be one of the most over superstars in the WWE, as he constantly received huge pops at his peak.
Both men aren't doing anything right now, and we've seen before that pairing these two up would work. There are so many avenues that they could go with Hawkins & Ryder together, as you could set them up as two vandals that are ready to takeover the tag team division- just like Curt Hawkins & Tyler Reks used to be.
Hawkins & Ryder could be a solid pairing that wouldn't even need to split up down the line, as they would be perfect for the tag team division. Hell, you could even have them appear on an episode of Cutting Edge by causing chaos in the set, or even attack Edge to get them over. There is no doubt that the possibilities are absolutely endless.
#1 EC3 & Drake Maverick
Imagine a tag team that would be more sneaky, conniving and narcissistic as the pairing of EC3 & Drave Maverick?
We have seen this pair before, back in Impact Wrestling when Drake Maverick used to be known as Rockstar Spud. The two men were part of Dixie Carter's authority stable, and there is no denying that the two men used to entertain the world on a weekly basis.
However right now, Maverick is currently the GM for 205 Live as well as the manager for Authors of Pain but that really doesn't seem to be working. It just doesn't feel the same without Paul Ellering, and Maverick being AOP's manager seems like a huge waste.
But as for EC3, he is soon moving to Monday Night Raw from NXT. He hasn't had much success in NXT due to the wide broad of talent that is on the NXT roster. There are so many superstars that are better than in the ring than EC3, but there aren't many that can match his promo ability.
Reuniting EC3 & Drake Maverick would be a great idea because they both have similar characters that could work well together. You could simply have Maverick turn on AOP by introducing EC3 as his tag team partner, and that could easily set up their first big rivalry in a brutal team like AOP.
Both men are also good in the ring, but they are more than able to put on a good story- as Maverick has plenty of experience from wrestling on the independent scene. The same can be said for EC3, due to his bouts against Rockstar Spud himself & Bobby Lashley.
This could be the perfect opportunity for EC3 & Maverick to showcase their abilities, and become one of the best tag teams in the WWE today. It could be a long-lasting pairing, and the potential in terms of promo is absolutely endless.
