Tag teams in WWE very rarely end well. Over the years, only a few have actually stayed together. 2020 saw so many beloved tag teams break up, some with a purpose and some without one.
Among those without a real plan for at least one of the members were WWE's splitting of The IIconics and Heavy Machinery. Other teams that did not last the year were Seth Rollins' faction, the team of Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross, The New Day as a trio, and The Golden Role Models, among others.
The same thing could happen in 2021 as well, with multiple tag teams and factions possibly being torn apart by WWE. There have already been cracks within one of the teams in question, while another has already broken up this year.
Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura aren't a team anymore, with the Japanese Superstar turning face. Meanwhile, several others could go through the same fate. Some might have a big break-up feud, while others could quietly go their separate ways.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
Here are five teams WWE could break up in 2021.
#5 The Miz and John Morrison could break up and feud on WWE RAW
For the betterment of both of their careers, The Miz and John Morrison need to break up and go their separate ways. They have been joke performers for too long now, something that should never be said about the Money in the Bank holder. While they could work as a serious duo, WWE likely won't go in that direction.
After getting embarrassed on a near-weekly basis on RAW, surely Miz and Morrison will fall out and feud with each other. They will likely face Bad Bunny in some sort of WrestleMania tag team match, so that could be the beginning of the end for The Dirt Street.
If The Miz is to cash in his Money in the Bank successfully, his character must take a complete turn. He could do so by turning on John Morrison, who would then be reminded of his own abilities as an in-ring mastermind. The Prince of Parkour should turn face in a couple of months.
Miz and Morrison could even feud over the Money in the Bank contract, while taking a serious tone - one that is much more serious than their current schtick. The Miz and John Morrison's current act grew tiresome months before WWE even moved to the ThunderDome, and it is time to change things for them.
#4 The Hurt Business could implode on WWE RAW
This is something that should not happen in WWE this year. In fact, The Hurt Business should ideally expand over the course of 2021. MVP's faction is one of the few bright spots on RAW, with their motive of inflicting pain being simple enough to get the WWE fans on board.
Bobby Lashley is a vicious killer and has a vice-like grip on the United States Championship. However, there has been some friction between Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander lately. They may be the current RAW Tag Team Champions, but have had quite a few arguments in recent weeks.
It feels like The Hurt Business is on the verge of imploding, or at the very least, either Benjamin or Alexander will be kicked out of the group. If the latter happens, WWE must be sure to add another member. Perhaps, a female member like Naomi would spice things up further.
Either way, it would be a mistake if WWE decides to break up The Hurt Business. It single-handedly revitalized the careers of four different Superstars. Hopefully, Shelton Benjamin and Cedric Alexander get on the same page and the unit becomes even stronger as a result.
#3 RETRIBUTION could go their separate ways in WWE
One of the biggest mistakes WWE made in 2020 was the entire presentation of this new faction, apparently hellbent on destroying WWE. RETRIBUTION. They were treated like absolute jabronies quickly, with some ridiculous names and masks. Even the addition of Mustafa Ali to the group did not do much to help things.
All of Ali's and RETRIBUTION's best work has come in social media-exclusive interviews, with WWE not acknowledging their true motivations. They are pretty much a lost cause right now, and it seems like WWE will pull the plug on them at some point this year.
Mustafa Ali deserves so much better than he has at the moment. He is more than capable of being a big player in the upper echelons of RAW or SmackDown, both in the ring and on promos. The sooner WWE repackages him away from RETRIBUTION, the better.
Meanwhile, the other members are also talented enough to do well on WWE's main roster. The likes of Mia Yim and Dominik Dijakovic could improve RAW as a program, but not when they are under masks and called Reckoning and T-BAR, respectively.
#2 Undisputed Era could be torn apart on WWE NXT
While an Undisputed Era break-up has been teased by WWE for a while, it seems like something has got to give in 2021. They are more than ready to move to RAW or SmackDown. However, if The Undisputed Era remains on NXT in a few months' time, a break-up angle may be imminent.
It seemed like Adam Cole would turn on Kyle O'Reilly after one of his NXT title matches against Finn Balor, but it did not happen. They are now babyfaces, with no clear direction aside from the fact that they are pals with Balor. A huge betrayal would surely spice things up in NXT and make it must-see TV.
A feud between Cole and O'Reilly would be the biggest one on NXT since possibly Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa in 2018. The scene has been set perfectly, with O'Reilly venturing out into singles competition a lot more than Cole is currently doing.
WWE has to do something with The Undisputed Era in 2021 - be it a main roster move, Kyle O'Reilly being booted out, or a civil war between members. They have already cemented themselves as the greatest team in NXT history, making this an even more monumental happening.
#1 The Usos could be separated as a result of the family drama with WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns
Perhaps, the most shocking tag team break-up in WWE this year could be between The Usos. It would be another chapter in the multi-layered family saga of Roman Reigns. His feud with Jey Uso last fall was excellent, before the tag team specialist fell in line under The Tribal Chief.
Jey Uso is now a heel whose only purpose is to make things easier for his superior cousin, while Jimmy Uso has not been seen on WWE TV since he inadvertently caused his twin's defeat against Reigns in their 'I Quit' Match inside Hell in a Cell. He may be ready to return in the coming weeks or so, which would further this family drama.
Jimmy Uso might take issue with the way Jey Uso is acting as Reigns' second and defy the Universal Champion's orders. This would lead to a feud between the Uso twins, possibly culminating at WrestleMania. There is so much juice in this story, with WWE fans having no idea what Jimmy Uso will do upon his return.
Sure, Jimmy Uso will likely turn heel and eventually align himself with his family. But before that happens, The Usos could be broken up with Jey Uso being ordered by Roman Reigns to assault his brother. If WWE so wishes, both Usos could both become singles stars on their own as well.
Jey Uso has already shown how capable he is in that regard.
