From the storyline point of view, referees are people who are there to ensure that the wrestlers are competing within the ‘rules’ that are defined. Referees also have the authority to change the outcome of a match and decide the winner.

But this power is not what lets them into this list. Ever noticed the earpieces that the referees wear? Why do they have earpieces?

Just like the commentators out there, the referees have earpieces so that they can get instructions from backstage, which in turn will have an impact on how the on-going match turns out. It is easy to convey certain messages to the wrestlers through the referee since they are part of the act.

This magical power of referees is something that WWE tries to hide. Referees are projected as fragile pieces that get knocked out even if the wind blows hard.
