Total Divas season 8 began in heartbreaking fashion for the returning Paige. The current Smackdown general manager revealed that she had suffered a career-ending injury and was forced to retire in the same city she debuted in (New Orleans) the day after WrestleMania.

Paige appeared desperate to heal her career-ending neck injury. In a last-ditch effort to return to doing what she loves, she turned to the occult. Paige visited a voodoo practitioner, who designed a voodoo doll in Paige's image. Paige had hoped that the doll would inevitably lead to a complete healing of her injury.

An emotional Paige stated,

Wrestling's been my life - literally been my life, since I've been in the womb....everything's been taken away from me right now.

When her overtly dogmatic friend Naomi was withholding her support for Paige's newfound fascination with the occult Paige vented,

"I've prayed to her God and it doesn't do anything for me."
