They are there to make sure that the wrestlers competing in the ring are OK and safe. Referees can be seen communicating with wrestlers in the ring, especially when a wrestler is locked in a facelock or headlock. They are also informed of the outcome of a match, so they know who is going to win the match and how it is going to end.

Referees wear earpieces so that Vince McMahon and Triple H can speak to them, inform them of any changes and what they have to do. Referees are also informed when a commercial break is about to begin so that they can inform the wrestlers in the ring.
