By mid-2005, it was public knowledge that Lita had cheated on Matt Hardy, with none other than Hardy's best friend, Edge. WWE decided to turn this real-life love triangle into a storyline. At SummerSlam 2005, Matt Hardy met Edge in a match that ended with Hardy busting his head open on one of the ring posts. Due to Hardy getting busted open, the victory was awarded to Edge. A month later, the two fought again inside a Steel Cage, with Hardy picking up the win this time.
On a special episode of Monday Night RAW, Hardy and Edge competed in a Ladder match, with the stipulation stating that the loser would leave the show. Edge's Money In The Bank briefcase was on the line as well. The final moments of the match saw Lita holding on to Matt on the ring ropes, resulting in Edge grabbing the briefcase. One of the greatest rivalries in WWE history came to a bitter end and Matt Hardy was moved to SmackDown.

Given the opportunity to script WWE’s next big storyline, Abhilash would treat fans to the second installment of The Bloodline Civil War. He would book Roman Reigns to re-form The Bloodline with The Usos and Sami Zayn upon his comeback. The angle would see The Tribal Chief-led group go head-to-head with The Rock, Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, and Jacob Fatu in a blockbuster family feud.
