The WWE Universe are the reason that Kofi Kingston is Champion

Kofi Kingston is a veteran right now and has never been pushed towards the WWE Championship because there was a belief that he wasn't the right fit for the spot at the top of the company.

Earlier this year, Mustafa Ali sustained an injury in a match against Randy Orton which forced WWE to replace him in a gauntlet match on SmackDown Live ahead of Elimination Chamber.

This lead to Kingston being given a place in the match and the WWE Universe backing him all the way through, including at the pay-per-view where he should have won the WWE Championship.

The original plan according to GiveMeSport was for Kevin Owens to take on Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania, but after WWE saw just how popular Kingston had become, they decided to allow him to fight for the title on The Grandest Stage of Them All instead
