The 2020 Royal Rumble matches saw Charlotte Flair and Drew McIntyre winning to punch their tickets to title matches at WrestleMania 36. Flair had a strong showing and eliminated Shayna Baszler last to win the free-for-all. McIntyre dominated the match immediately after coming out, eliminating Brock Lesnar in the very beginning. He later threw Roman Reigns out to win the whole thing.
Soon after, reports started coming in that WWE had planned for two other Superstars to win their respective Royal Rumble matches. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that the original plans for the PPV were for Roman Reigns and Shayna Baszler to come out victorious. Fans wouldn't have minded Baszler winning the women's match, but Reigns winning the men's Royal Rumble would probably have led to fans turning on him again. Eventually, McIntyre challenged Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36 for the WWE title, winning the belt with the aid of four Claymore Kicks. Flair defeated Rhea Ripley at the event to bag the NXT Women's title.

Given the opportunity to script WWE’s next big storyline, Abhilash would treat fans to the second installment of The Bloodline Civil War. He would book Roman Reigns to re-form The Bloodline with The Usos and Sami Zayn upon his comeback. The angle would see The Tribal Chief-led group go head-to-head with The Rock, Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, and Jacob Fatu in a blockbuster family feud.
