Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose had been sworn enemies throughout 2014 and 2015, where faced off against one another on numerous occasions. Ambrose was a constant thorn in Rollins' path. After failing to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Rollins despite numerous attempts, Ambrose finally got one over Rollins after he cashed in his MITB contract on Rollins after the former had just beaten Roman Reigns to capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Money in the Bank 2016.

Following MITB, a Shield triple threat match between Rollins, Ambrose, and Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship was announced for WWE Battleground. After Reigns was suspended for a wellness policy violation, Rollins and Ambrose were tasked with the build-up of this dream match. Things really got heated between The Architect and The Lunatic Fringe during a promo segment prior to Battleground.

Ambrose was in top form throughout spitting fire at every given opportunity. Ambrose mannerism throughout the segment and how he went from being cheerful and jolly to cold and sadistic in a moment's time was absolutely incredible. This was, without a doubt, his best promo in WWE.
