After failing to win the Royal Rumble match in 2008, The Undertaker made sure that he headlined WrestleMania 24 by emerging victorious in the Elimination Chamber match at No Way Out. The Phenom would then face Edge at The Show of Shows to win back his World Heavyweight Championship. However, their feud would continue until SummerSlam.

Between WrestleMania 24 and SummerSlam 2008, The Rated-R Superstar and The Phenom would face each other countless times. In June, Edge would defeat and (kayfabe) force The Undertaker to leave the WWE.

However, not only was The Undertaker reinstated by then General Manager Vickie Guerrero on the road to SummerSlam, but he was also granted a Hell in a Cell match against Edge at The Biggest Party of the Summer.

At SummerSlam 2008, The Undertaker would defeat Edge to close the night. Thus, in addition to headlining WrestleMania 24, the two icons also ended up main eventing SummerSlam, making their feud one of the top programs of the year.
