#3 Pat McAfee almost walked out (WWE WrestleMania 35)
Pat McAfee quickly established himself as one of WWE’s most popular announcers after he became a color commentator on SmackDown after WrestleMania 37. Two years earlier, however, McAfee’s WWE journey almost ended before it began.
The former NFL star wore tuxedo pants instead of his usual jorts while appearing in segments on the WrestleMania 35 kickoff show. Michael Cole, WWE’s Vice President of Announcing, had told McAfee before the show that he was not allowed to wear jorts. The latter turned his tuxedo pants into shorts as a result, which led Cole to yell at him for looking unprofessional.
Following WrestleMania 35, McAfee said on The Pat McAfee Show that he almost walked out after being yelled at backstage.
“I then walked back to where watch-a-long was happening and I grabbed my bag," McAfee said. "And I told the digital guy, I said, 'You can tell Michael Cole to go f*** himself. I am leaving. I am not getting punked and yelled at like a child in front of everybody. You guys think I’m some schlub. This is a second job to me, I’m very lucky to be here, very excited to here, but I’m not going to get yelled at like I’m a f***ing child.’” [H/T Wrestling News Co.]
Cole reacted so furiously because he thought McAfee’s WWE future could be at risk if Vince McMahon saw him wearing casual attire at WrestleMania. In the end, the WWE Chairman approved McAfee’s tuxedo shorts after being shown a picture of basketball star Lebron James wearing similar clothing.
Following their misunderstanding, McAfee went on to say that Cole gave him “one of the realest apologies” he has ever received.
