In 2018, AJ Styles engaged in yet another feud with one of his all-time greatest rivals in the form of Samoa Joe. Having previously shared the ring with each other in TNA (Impact Wrestling), Styles and Joe began a feud in the summer of 2018 when the latter attacked 'The Phenomenal One' and got a shot at the WWE Championship.

However, after failing to capture the WWE Title at SummerSlam, Joe continued his rivalry with Styles. Only this time, he decided to involve the latter's wife, Wendy, claiming that he would defeat 'The Phenomenal One' and become the "new daddy".

This eventually led to a series of matches between Styles and Joe, with Styles retaining the WWE Championship over his arch-rival in controversial fashion at Hell in a Cell. He then retaining the gold over him on two additional occasions, at WWE Super ShowDown and Crown Jewel.
Throughout the feud, Joe was spotted invading Styles' house and targeting his wife Wendy, so much so he the former also decided to call out Wendy after brutally beating up her husband on an episode of SmackDown.
