AJ Styles is the first TNA Original to win the WWE Championship. He’s become a footnote in history that’s paved the way for other TNA Superstars to make that leap of faith. Many a WWE Superstar has left the WWE to make headway in TNA, while AJ Styles has bucked that trend in emphatic fashion, even beating John Cena on his way to it.
He’s become an inspiration to the likes of Bobby Roode and the two are even close friends. For several years, Roode & Styles competed to be the top star in TNA, pushed each other to the limit in terms of wrestling & promo performances.
It was a rivalry built on competition, respect and friendship. Roode can rest well knowing that he’s the longest ever reigning TNA World champion, something that Styles doesn't have on his CV. But in the same breath, Styles won the WWE title, so they’re even.
In their time in TNA, Styles & Roode became close and the Glorious one was deeply upset with Styles for leaving for New Japan in 2014. But he accepted his decision was for career progression, not greed.
