SummerSlam's early years saw Bret Hart steal the show year in, year out. His first few matches at the event came alongside Jim Neidhart, with the two of them making up the Hart Foundation. Their contests against The Brain Busters in 1989 and especially Demolition in 1990 remain tag team classics.

Hart's progression up the card was showcased at SummerSlam as he won the Intercontinental Championship from Mr. Perfect in 1991. The Hitman lost the IC Title to The British Bulldog in an emotionally charged contest at Wembley Stadium, SummerSlam 1992.

While matches against Jerry 'The King' Lawler and Isaac Yankem DDS left a lot to be desired, Bret Hart wowed the world at the 1994 edition of the August supershow. He retained the WWE Championship over his brother, Owen Hart, in a brilliant Steel Cage Match.

The two-time WWE Hall of Famer would further his SummerSlam legacy in 1997, where he won the world title from The Undertaker in yet another excellent contest. Bret Hart was remarkably consistent at The Biggest Event of the Summer and contributed to its emergence as a major pay-per-view.
