During her time in Japan, Io spent several years working as a tag team wrestler alongside her sister Mio. The two women won several Championships throughout their time together before they were joined by Kana (now known as Asuka in WWE) and formed the Triple Tails stable.
Io later broke away from the group and went on to become a singles star, whilst her sister retired from the business following a neck injury in 2015. Mio has since gone on to begin working as a referee instead. Mio also announced that she and her husband had welcomed their first child in June 2017.
