Asuka has been one of the top female superstars in WWE since joining the company in 2015.
Although the former RAW Women's Champion made her main roster debut on the Red Brand in 2017, she later moved to SmackDown in the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-up. However, The Empress of Tomorrow returned to RAW nearly a year later as part of the 2019 WWE Draft.
For the next two years, Asuka competed regularly on the Red Brand. Nevertheless, she has been out of action since last July due to injury. She last competed in the 2021 Money in the Bank ladder match.

Like Elias, Asuka did not get drafted in the 2021 Draft. Hence, she is currently considered a free agent. The Empress of Tomorrow can now make her comeback on SmackDown or RAW.

While some reports suggested that Asuka would return to action in the 2022 Women's Royal Rumble match, she did not. As per Fightful Select, WWE did discuss the possibility of her return at the Royal Rumble premium live event.
In the end, the company decided to postpone her comeback as they felt she was not physically ready to make her in-ring return.
