There is an air of excitement in WWE right now heading into the winter and towards the new year when the Road to WrestleMania will begin at the Royal Rumble. The Rumble often throws up plenty of surprises, with legendary stars making returns at the premium live event. A familiar face might soon be putting his wrestling gear back on for an in-ring return at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 1.

The name in question, Wade Barrett has been entertaining fans as one of the voices of WWE. He has worked on commentary since last competing nine years ago, but there are hints that he could soon return, potentially at the Royal Rumble.

The 44-year-old recently responded to a post on WWE's X/Twitter account. He toyed with the idea of his in-ring career not being over.

"*Career highlights, thus far."

Wade Barrett was a popular name during his wrestling days. He made his in-ring debut in the February 2010 episode of NXT and his groundbreaking appearance on WWE RAW in June 2010. He was the leader of the Nexus and destroyed the ring along with John Cena and ring announcer Justin Roberts.

Barrett would quickly be thrust into the main event picture as the Nexus feuded with Cena. The faction's legitimacy faded after significant losses, but he remained a mainstay on the main roster as a singles star.

Barrett is a former Intercontinental Champion and King of the Ring winner. He last competed in the promotion on April 28, 2016, before starting a career as a commentator in 2020 and still doing so on RAW.

Several commentators have made Royal Rumble appearances. Jerry Lawler, Booker T, and Pat McAfee have thrown their headsets down and rumbled in the past.

Wade Barrett could start a feud with Drew McIntyre at the WWE Royal Rumble

Wade Barrett's Royal Rumble appearance could lead to a longer run as a competitor if he feels up for it. There are many storylines for King Barrett should he return to the ring, including a feud with Drew McIntyre.

Barrett and McIntyre are longtime friends and held the FCW Tag Team Championships in developmental. The wrestler-turned-commentator had The Scottish Warrior's back during his heated feud with CM Punk.

McIntyre recently warned Barrett to stay out of his business on RAW, leading to a frosty encounter between the two. It looked like they were planting the seeds for a future feud, which could start at the Royal Rumble.

The former Nexus leader could eliminate McIntyre from the Rumble, which would shock the WWE Universe. He could retaliate by throwing his former friend over the ropes, and a brawl could ensue, leading to a return match at WrestleMania 41.
