The Season Premiere of Friday Night SmackDown had an extremely interesting and impressive guest list. While many of those who made it to the show were former WWE Superstars, there were also a few celebrities who were invited to the show. One of the athletes invited to the show was none other than the Heavyweight Boxing Champion Tyson Fury.
Fury got into a confrontation with Braun Strowman during the night, and their story spilled over to the following episode of RAW. Not only did this provide a lot of mileage to Strowman and his character, but it also built interest in wrestling for non-wrestling fans who follow Fury.
WWE will want to carry on the momentum for the weeks to come and keep the story in the loop for a big match between these two men down the line. While it seems like the two will lock horns at the Crown Jewel pay-per-view, we have 6 reasons why the match should take place at Survivor Series.
#6 Allows more time to build
Tyson was confronted by Braun Strowman before he took to the ring for his eight-man tag team match, and Strowman delivered a running power slam to Dolph Ziggler to end his match while having his eyes on Fury.
This prompted the aggressive Fury to jump the barricade and enter the arena floor before security had to restrict him while Strowman had a good laugh from inside the ring.
The following episode of Monday Night RAW saw Fury come out to address the WWE Universe with Jerry “The King” Lawler inside the ring, and then demanded an apology from Strowman for his actions. Instead, Strowman took to the ring and disrespected Fury even more, which led to an all-out brawl.
This clearly shows that the two men will be going head to head at some time in the future, with Crown Jewel looking like the most probable host of the most. However, the company should build this rivalry over the weeks to come.
WWE at times has a habit of rushing into rivalries without giving adequate time for story buildingm and this huge match deserves a bigger story than it already has. Having Fury appear on RAW or SmackDown over the weeks to come will help the shows to get more ratings and keep the fans involved in the feud. We could also see Strowman run through the Superstars who believe Fury is a better athlete over that time in order to give both men a lot of credibility.
#5 A familiar crowd, bigger hype
Let's get one thing straight - Strowman is one of the faces of the company at the moment whose images have made it to many of the company’s promotional material and posters, while Fury is in a league of his own and one of the most well-known boxers in the world.
This requires WWE to give them a grand stage to perform in, which Saudi Arabia is very well capable of providing. However, do the crowds know Strowman and Fury as the crowds in Illinois do?
Having the match between the two men at a venue where they will have fans cheering from both sides will make things even grander. Just like WWE had Bray Wyatt appear on some shows before his grand Hell in a Cell clash with Seth Rollins, the company could cash in on some appearances from both Strowman and Fury.
Fury is well known for his attention-grabbing tricks during his boxing career which made him make the headlines more often than not and sent him trending all over the internet.
With many late-night shows open to having athletes and celebrities appear, WWE could use such mediums to build the hype as much as possible and create as much social media hype as possible for the next month or so.
#4 Gives Strowman a new assignment for Survivor Series
Since Survivor Series 2016, Braun Strowman has had the same assignment, which he has stuck very well to. He has been part of Team RAW’s 5-on-5 elimination team and has helped his team win the traditional match in 2017 and 2018.
Even though Strowman has been a strong member of Team RAW since 2016, it’s time that the company gives him a singles match at the big pay-per-view and allow him to get a push.
Strowman has never won a singles championship in his career, which has led to him never having a one-on-one match at Survivor Series. This has required him to stick to the usual brand tag team action. The company has built Strowman as a big Superstar with the ability to pull the crowds, and they should use this to their benefit during a major pay-per-view like Survivor Series.
Fans are going to fill the arenas in Saudi Arabia no matter what the card is, as the entertainment hungry nation loves to come out to support wrestlers regardless of the matches on the card. Survivor Series, on the other hand, could do with a major match involving Strowman and Fury to boost ticket sales.
This could allow Strowman to have a big match for the first time on the pay-per-view and have a chance to prove himself, as he has usually failed in big matches and needs a boost to get to the top once again.
#3 Keep Strowman out of any Championship picture for some time
At a time when WWE is trying its best to keep the Monster Among Men’s hands off a Championship belt, fans have been asking the company to give him a title before he loses all credibility.
Going to battle with “The People’s Champion” in the boxing world is definitely going to increase Strowman’s credibility, and if he wins the match, fans will want him to get in the title picture once again. If the match between the two takes place at Crown Jewel, then it will be difficult for the company to ignore the fans for long, and therefore it will be best if the match is delayed until Survivor Series.
The time between now and Survivor Series will allow the company to keep Strowman completely out of any championship picture while building on other storylines along with this one.
It will also give them time to keep Strowman away from men like AJ Styles and Bray Wyatt, as they continue to have their own feuds until the big event.
With Wyatt already circling the Universal Champion, and Styles looking to have a long United States Championship run, it will help the company if they keep Strowman involved in another major feud.
#2 Fits better in with the theme of the pay-per-view
Survivor Series is all about having Superstars and Champions of the two main brands go head to head. Traditionally, we see the Universal Champion from RAW take on the WWE Champion from SmackDown, while the RAW and SmackDown Women’s Champion go head to head. Apart from that, even the mid-card and the tag team champions face each other at the event, while other Superstars form teams to show brand supremacy.
Similarly, WWE could hype the match between Strowman and Fury as the battle between two major combat sports. Fury is a huge name in boxing, while Strowman has found his footing in the wrestling world.
The match would fit perfectly with the theme of the pay-per-view, and it would provide the company with an interesting point to sell tickets for the event and generate the hype.
We’ve seen Big Show take on Floyd Mayweather in a match where the King of Boxing came out on top, and the company could use that point to their advantage and dub the affair as an even bigger match where Strowman will represent the company. Mayweather vs. Big Show was a huge success at WrestleMania 24, and the same effect can be used at Survivor Series for this match.
#1 Gives Tyson Fury a chance to perfect the skill
Sports entertainment is unlike other combat sports, and it requires a special skill set and a lot of training to perfect and do safely.
The last time a well-known boxer entered the squared circle, we saw the Big Show leave with a red face and a broken nose. To ensure that it does not happen again, WWE will be wanting to take some measures.
On Monday Night RAW, we saw a brawl between Fury and Strowman which involved half the men’s locker room too. At a time when Strowman’s attacks seemed more threatening, it was very obvious that Fury was holding his punches back and just targeting Strowman’s sides.
After the brawl, Cesaro was the lone ranger left in the ring with Fury, but something he did or said prompted Fury to deliver a couple of punches to the Swiss Superman which completely knocked him out. However, repeated viewsof the video show that Fury was unable to land the punches on Cesaro, and the botch made him look a bit more unprofessional in the world of wrestling.
Therefore, WWE needs to give Fury time and more training to ensure that no major botches come out of the big match between him and Strowman which could either injure one of the two stars, or make the match have negative reviews.
