WWE Monday Night RAW aired earlier, and it was a fantastic show. However, this edition of the red brand was also noteworthy. It was the final episode to air on traditional cable, as the program moves to Netflix next week.
The last-ever match on RAW on USA Network saw IYO SKY and Lyra Valkyria put on a modern television classic. The last-ever segment, however, was an intense promo battle between CM Punk and Seth Rollins.
Both men came out with rage ahead of their one-on-one match on RAW next week. The two men threw numerous barbs back and forth, with each seemingly stinging more than the last.
In addition to the barbs, many references were made that some fans might not have noticed. This article will examine six of them during the CM Punk and Seth Rollins RAW segment.
A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.
#6. Becky Lynch taking a break from WWE was referenced
CM Punk mentioned "The Man" walking away from WWE. Seth Rollins then shot down Punk's attempt at using his wife's absence against him, noting she was caring for a child.
This was interesting for a few reasons. Becky has been away from WWE for the better part of the last six months or so. Her contract had apparently expired, and she took a break from the company.
That said, all signs point to The Man returning to RAW next week, which makes Punk's comment even more interesting. She has been used in advertising for RAW's debut on Netflix and even made a media appearance. Could Becky return as part of the Seth Rollins-CM Punk match?
#5. Stone Cold Steve Austin walking out was brought up
Besides mentioning Becky Lynch going home, CM Punk also brought up another infamous example of a star walking out of WWE. In 2002, Stone Cold Steve Austin "took his ball and went home."
The Texas Rattlesnake was asked to lose to Brock Lesnar in a somewhat impromptu match on an episode of WWE RAW. Austin, frustrated with the creative team and dealing with serious health issues, opted to walk out instead.
Punk's use of this line was arguably a mistake, as Austin has flatly said walking out was an error. That takes a lot of the bite out of The Second City Saint's comment, which The Visionary quickly made apparent.
#4. AJ Lee and CM Punk not having children was alluded to
When Seth Rollins opted to rebut Punk's statement about Becky Lynch, he took a cheap shot of his own. The Visionary said Becky was away from WWE to be at home and care for their child. Rollins then noted that was something CM Punk couldn't understand.
This may have cut deeper than some fans realize. CM Punk has been in a long-term relationship and is married to former WWE star AJ Lee. Despite being together for a long time, the two do not have children.
Of course, that could very well be a decision they agreed to, and thus, Rollins' comment wasn't as effective as it may appear. If that isn't the case, it was a major cheap shot that surely got under Punk's skin.
#3. & #2. CM Punk's disastrous AEW run and controversial podcast was mentioned
Two other key references during the segment raised some eyebrows. Both involved Punk's time away from WWE: an infamous podcast and CM Punk's joining "the competition."
Regarding the podcast, after CM Punk walked out and was fired by WWE, he appeared on Colt Cabana's podcast and brutally buried the Sports Entertainment juggernaut. This eventually led to lawsuits and even the end of Punk's friendship with Colt Cabana.
That friendship ending went on to impact Punk's time in All Elite Wrestling, the "competition" referenced by Seth Rollins. Punk had issues with The Elite, who backed Colt Cabana in their real-life dispute. This eventually led to backstage fights and drama, ultimately leading to Tony Khan firing Punk.
#1. Seth Rollins being favored by Vince McMahon was referenced
The final notable reference from the segment came in a few forms. This article has regularly noted CM Punk and Seth Rollins discussing various stars "taking their ball and going home."
The root of that comment was Seth Rollins tearing down CM Punk for doing that. As a rebuttal, The Second City Saint mentioned that the line was stolen from Vince McMahon without saying his name directly. From there, Punk claimed that The Visionary was always a favorite of the former WWE Chairman.
This line hit because Vince is no longer with WWE. Many notable allegations were raised about his time in and outside the company, which ultimately led to McMahon leaving the company and TKO. Punk used Vince to claim Seth was certainly taking things to a harsh level that nobody saw coming.
