The first WWE RAW after Wrestlemania is definitely one of the must – see shows on television. Not only because of the Wrestlemania repercussions, but also for the next set of interesting story lines that take shape from here.
This RAW certainly lived up to its hype and will be remembered for a lot of things ranging from the Ultimate Warrior’s last television appearance to Cesaro becoming the next ‘Heyman guy’. But one thing it will definitely in all probability be remembered for is that a new Divas champion was crowned.
Yes! ladies and gentlemen, Paige, a little known girl from the NXT division stepped into the fold and did what no other Diva has been able to do for quite a long time now, defeat champion AJ Lee and become the new WWE Divas champion.
This certainly is a well thought out storyline that the WWE writers have ‘FINALLY’ approached. The Divas division breathes the word monotony through and through. Every PPV, a new challenger is dragged into the fold and made to suffer the same fate just like all the other ‘glam dolls’ backstage.
Gone are the days when the Divas division was on par with what the men out there did. From the likes of winning titles meant for their male counterparts to being thrown through tables, the Divas have done it all to legitimately claim a spot in the history of professional wrestling.
Hence, as conventional wrestling fans, we are used to seeing Divas fight competitive matches and give you your money’s worth. Now a days, they just pull each others hair and scream and shout to no avail. It is indeed ironic that a division that once played host to legends like Chyna, Trish, Lita, Molly Holly etc is now being used as a filler in almost all of WWE’s shows.
With all that being said and done, a change was expected at least at Wrestlemania XXX, a Pay-per-view that certainly looked to change fortunes for a lot of superstars involved. However, that hope vanished with a lackluster ‘Vicki Guerrero invitational’ match that can perhaps be described as the sole disappointment of what was otherwise a phenomenal Wrestlemania show.
Analyzing our former champion, she was just what the division needed at that instance. She wore the title around her like a wrist watch and toyed with the emotions of stars ranging from the likes of CM Punk to Kane to even fan favorite Daniel Bryan.
AJ Lee indeed injected some freshness into the Divas division with her ‘over the top’ antics and impressive mike skills. However, she too has outlived her aura with a series of perennial boring matches ( can’t blame her though ). It was about time the WWE made the switch and they have done rightly so with the new prodigy, Paige.
There is something about this newbie that has got the fans excited. Is it her looks? her legacy? or her accent is left to be seen. But whatever it maybe, they seem to connect well with the new divas champion and this moment certainly will remain as a ‘Paige turning’ episode in the history books of the divas division.
She is currently the WWE Divas Champion and the NXT Women’s champion, a feat that has never been witnessed in the history of the WWE. She has also defeated established superstars like Alicia fox, Natalya and even AJ Lee’s personal bodyguard Tamina Snuka.
The WWE has always used its ‘English’ prodigies to great effect and given a considerable push to stars ranging from the likes of the William Regal to Wade Barrett. Let’s hope that Paige too is able to cling on to the opportunity presented to her and make it big in this business.
