Asuka is the current WWE Women's Champion and performs on the SmackDown brand. In 2004 she started her pro wrestling career for AtoZ promotion and retired in 2006 from there. She returned as a freelancer in 2007 and performed in various promotions such as Smash, NEO Japan Ladies Pro-Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Wave, JWP Joshi Puroresu, Reina Joshi Puroresu, and Wrestling New Classic. She won Smash Diva Championship, JWP Openweight Championship, and Wave Tag Team Championship in her free circuit tenure. Asuka signed with WWE in 2015 and became the first female wrestler from Japan to sign a deal with WWE in over 20 years. In 2016 she won the NXT Women's Championship and created the record as the longest title holder with 510 days. She also won the Women's Money in the Bank ladder match in 2020 and the Elimination Chamber match in 2023. Asuka is the only woman to win the Money in the Bank, Royal Rumble, and Elimination Chamber matches in the history of WWE. She is the Second Women's Grand Slam Champion and Third Women's Triple Crown Champion. Asuka was ranked at the top spot among 150 female wrestlers by Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) in 2017 and at the 5th spot among the top 10 female wrestlers by Sports Illustrated in 2018.

She started her career as a graphic designer and later shifted to the wrestling world. Asuka began her pro wrestling vocation with the in-ring name Kana. She also took several names throughout her independent circuits like Princess Kana, Skull Reaper Kana, Ramen Woman, Kana-hime, and Tomoe Gozen.
