One must admit that despite what anyone may think about the outcome of the Lesnar-Goldberg match at Survivor Series, it’s got everyone talking. While this week's Raw wasn't the perfect show, there were enough moving components, to prove that WWE has cut down on the filler.
Perhaps the most promising aspect of the show was that Goldberg returned in the aftermath of his valiant win at Survivor Series, unlike some big match angles that are left unresolved at times.
Let’s travel to the Air Canada Center in Toronto, Ontario for our latest instalment of Best and Worst, this week.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
#1 Worst: ‘You Screwed Bret’
While the crowd in Canada is very lively and energetic, this is a chant that just put a dampener on things. Goldberg, in front of his wife and son, were subjected to ‘You screwed Bret’ choruses (based on his accidental kick that, in part, contributed to ending Bret Hart’s career in WCW).
We know that nobody regrets that as much as Goldberg does, and it was annoying to see a man in the twilight of his career being reprimanded for an honest mistake. Imagine if Rollins got ‘you screwed Sting’ chants at every show. Let it go, Canada!
#1 Best: First Royal Rumble Entrant
WWE needs big names to fill up the Alomodome for the upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view, and they needed a superhero to save the day.
Guess which superhero showed up?
Goldberg as a part of The Royal Rumble is a great way to ensure big money. It also guarantees that last night’s Survivor Series match wasn’t a one-off, but part of an ongoing angle with Goldberg and possibly Brock Lesnar. We’re glad it wasn’t a one and done deal!
#2 Worst: Naked Enzo Amore. Ewww!
In the PG era, where even blading and bleeding are banned, we have a segment with Enzo Amore gallivanting naked in the backstage area. How does anyone find this amusing, funny or relevant to anything at all?
Not only will this disgust the predominantly male audience of the product, it strongly discourages parents from allowing their children to watch Raw anymore. We realize that it set up a match between Enzo and Rusev, but even then... what a silly way to set it up, quite honestly.
#2 Best: Hard hitting Main event
Now, this is one aspect of the Attitude Era that will actually appeal to the predominantly male audience.
An all out, no DQ match between the two best workers in the brand, with a title at stake. Rollins and Owens brawled everywhere in the arena, with everything they could find. There were tables, chairs and heck, even a breathtaking spot with Rollins jumping off the stands, and going all Shane O’ Mac on us all.
The most exciting part of the match was Chris Jericho in the Sin Cara costume, based on their real life fight in the UK. Whenever Jericho appears on screen, we keep wanting more of him!
#3 Worst: Punishment for Zayn?
Surely Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley watched the Intercontinental Championship match at Survivor Series. Why then, is Zayn being punished when he had the match won, but only lost thanks to interference from The Miz’s wife Maryse?
Because his kayfabe punishment is also translating into his on-screen burial at the hands of Braun Strowman, where he’s made to look weak and powerless. How far the mighty has fallen, since his glorious debut at The Royal Rumble.
We realise Foley has taken many chair shots to the head, but dude... get a grip!
#3 Best: The world is America
We saw this in Scotland, and now we see it in Canada. Lana refers to the local audience as Americans, and gets drenched in a shower of boos.
In an era where the two top heels of the company, JeriKO are more over than every single babyface, it is nice to see Lana playing a true heel. Hopefully, this results in Rusev getting the big program he deserves, to boost his career.
#4 Worst: Record breaking predictability
Today, we saw New Day defeat Cesaro and Sheamus for the tag team championships, in a match where New Day came off as the heels. This is because fans are tired of their never ending reign, in a quest to best Demolition’s Record (which lasts till WWE Roadblock).
We realise that The Club are Number 1 contenders now, but we already know the outcome in advance. We feel like skipping the New Day segments at times, really.
#4: BESTEST: We end with Renee...oops...Charly!
