Clash of Champions 2019: 3 Superstars who’ll be part of the event for the third consecutive time

Clash of Champions, just like the name suggests, witnesses the battle between reigning champions of the company against deserving challengers.

In 2016, WWE reintroduced the brand extension, splitting its main roster between the RAW and SmackDown brands. During the first two years, Clash of Champions was first held exclusively for the RAW brand while the 2017 event was SmackDown-exclusive; all titles exclusive to the respective brands during those years were defended at these respective events.

Clash of Champions did not occur in 2018, but after WrestleMania 34, all WWE pay-per-views became dual-branded. This year, the event will return to the WWE Network and will be the biggest event of its kind as we will witness at least ten championships from the RAW, SmackDown Live, and 205 Live brand on the line at the event.

Keeping that in mind, we dug deep to find out which wrestlers have been a part of the previous two events and also have a scheduled match for this year’s event. As the event was exclusive to one brand each year earlier, the list of Superstars is short but very interesting! Take a look at the three Superstars who have battled in various championship matches in the past two events, and will return for their third consecutive Clash of Champions.

#1 Big E

Big E will be stepping into the pay-per-view for the third time

As the second-ever NXT Champion, Big E has proven a lot in WWE. While his association with the New Day is still the biggest part of his career, many fans want to see the big man return to singles competition and win one of the two top main roster titles.

In 2016, Big E was one of the two men who defended the WWE RAW Tag Team Championships for the New Day at Clash of Champions. They defeated Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson at the event.

Following that up, the New Day walked into 2017’s Clash of Champions as the challengers for the SmackDown Tag Team Championships held by The Usos at the time. Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin, and Rusev and Aiden English were also part of the Fatal 4-Way tag team match which saw The Usos defend successfully. Big E was again part of the match as he was one of the two men who represented the New Day

This year, Big E will once again step in the ring, this time with Xavier Woods by his side. The two men will defend their SmackDown Tag Team Championships against The Revival.

This unique feat will also allow New Day to come face to face with five different tag teams of the company in three events.

#2 Charlotte

Charlotte was a RAW and SmackDown Women's Champion at the previous two events

Charlotte Flair has been one of the constants in the WWE women’s championships scene, and we have seen her as the champion or challenger in several pay-per-views.

In 2016, Charlotte Flair was the RAW Women’s Champion and was challenged by Sasha Banks and Bayley to a triple-threat match at Clash of Champions. Charlotte was successful at defending her championship against the two other top female wrestlers.

After moving to SmackDown from Raw later, Clash of Champions 2017 witnessed Charlotte defend the SmackDown Women's Championship successfully. This time, Charlotte faced Natalya in a Lumberjack Match and applied to Figure-Eight leg lock to win by submission.

This year, Charlotte will be walking into Clash of Champions as a challenger for the first time. The Queen will take on Bayley for her SmackDown Women’s title in a match which we expect to be topnotch.

#3 Kofi Kingston

This will be Kofi's biggest Clash of Champions match yet

Kofi Kingston has been an extraordinary performer his entire career. His hard work and determination has earned him several different championship reigns. Having held different titles on at least seventeen occasions for the company, you’d expect to see Kofi Kingston at every Clash of Champions pay-per-view.

During the 2016 and 2017 edition of the event, Kofi Kingston was the man who represented the New Day for the Tag Team Championships along with Big E, while Xavier Woods cheered the two men from outside the ring.

With Woods taking his place inside the ring for this year’s event, we will see Kofi Kingston defend his WWE Championship against none other than Randy Orton.

This will arguably be the biggest Clash of Champions match in Kofi’s career as he has come face to face with his biggest threat yet.

What will make his appearance even more interesting will be the fact that he will be part of a completely different match at the event for the third time. In 2016 he defended the RAW Tag Team Championships, in 2017 he was part of the SmackDown Tag Team Championship challenge, and in 2019 he will defend his WWE Championship.
